With 250 miles of shoreline, Wolf Creek State Park is an ideal destination in Central Illinois for swimmers and anglers. Here, you can relax on the beach, go swimming in the lake, hike in the indigenous woods or ride horses from the equestrian center. Fishing and boating are other popular activities at Wolf Creek State Park, which covers 11,100 acres of Lake Shelbyville. Windsor is the closest city to the state park, only 8 miles away, and other nearby cities include Springfield and Decatur. As you would expect in a northern state, it gets cold here in the winter; however, summer temperatures are warm and perfect for outdoor recreation.

RVing is a comfortable way to visit Wolf Creek State Park. You can rest well in a bed after a long day of hiking, horseback riding, and other demanding outdoor activities. If you don't own an RV, search throughout the rental options from RVshare.

Wolf Creek State Park

Wolf Creek State Park has a campground where you can park your RV. On-site, you'll find a dump station, showers, laundry, a picnic area, a basketball court, and other amenities. If you go fishing on the lake, you can prepare the fish at the fish cleaning station. The campground also has grills if you want to enjoy grilled food. Quiet hours at the park are from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. to ensure everyone gets a good night of sleep. Pets are allowed at the campground, but you need to keep them on a leash. An adult must also register your group when arriving at the campground. Another important thing to know is each person must pay $1 for access to the swimming beach. The price to camp varies based on the time of year; expect to pay more on holiday weekends.

Serenity Fields Farm

If you don't mind staying about 20 miles north of the park in Dalton City, IL, consider staying at Serenity Fields Farm for $45 a night. While at the farm, you're welcome to pet the alpacas, miniature horses, horses, bunnies, sheep, and other animals that live there. You're also allowed to build a campfire. If you don't bring your own firewood, they offer firewood bundles for $8. There are two campsites to choose from at Serenity Fields Farm. One is private, and the other is semi-private.

Inside Wolf Creek State Park

If you visit during late May to September 1 when the beach is open, you can soak up the rays on the swimming beach. Food and drink aren't allowed on the sand, but there are nearby picnic tables and grills where you can prepare food. Interested in catching largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, bluegill, walleye, and bullhead fish? Rent a boat from one of the private marinas at the park to go boating and fishing on the lake. If you're visiting in the winter, you can go for an exhilarating snowmobile ride down the 16 1/2-mile snowmobile trail.

The surrounding area has highly rated pubs, family restaurants, and gift shops worth visiting. There's also a big shopping mall close by and a fine dining restaurant if you want to have a romantic dinner. Furthermore, you won't want to return home before seeing some of the fascinating nearby sights.

How to Get to
Wolf Creek State Park

To get to Wolf Creek State Park, you'll most likely have to drive on State Highway 156 where you will turn onto FM 224 to arrive at the state park. Before making it to Route 156, you'll be on U.S. Highway 190 or U.S. Highway 59 depending on where you're traveling from.

Entering Wolf Creek State Park

While the park is always open, quiet hours are 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. If you plan on fishing, you must check the size limits and regulations at the superintendent's office.
