With four picnic shelters, the park is a great place to host family reunions with a stunning backdrop perfect for weddings. What to Do at
Crooked River State Park
With anglers hitting the water before the sun comes up, fishing is known to be a top sport at Crooked River. Rent your boat, kayak, or canoe in the park office and explore the river and marshy swamps. Paddling is also popular at the park and guided kayak tours are available for those who want to explore while learning more about the area leisurely. A playground and mini golf course give you a chance for exercise and fun away from the water. Visit the nature center to see some of the creatures that live on the land at Crooked River State Park and learn more about the ecology here.
With fishing, hiking, paddling, and mini golf, you'll need to you'll need to get your visit started early to pack everything in. Don't forget the hidden geocache and a trip to the bait shop.
Inside Crooked River State Park
Bring your favorite fishing equipment when heading to Crooked River State Park so that you can catch sheepshead, redfish, and flounder. Enjoy boating fun by bringing your boat or renting one from this park's tackle store. Explore the river on a guided kayak tour. Watch for birds while strolling along the paths that are surrounded by palmettos and Spanish moss-draped oaks. With the largest one holding 135 people, the two picnic shelters make great places to dine or host a group.
Fishing
From the shoreline, boat, or dock, you'll find a great variety of fish in the river. Black, drum, flounder, redfish, seatrout, sheepshead, and whiting are all popular species. Rays and small sharks are occasionally found swimming around near the shore. Shell bars, beaches, and patches of mud and grass are awesome areas for attracting redfish, trout, and drum.
Geocaching
Download the Parks GeoTour passport app and head out with your GPS to find the geocache at Crooked River State Park. Once found, write your name in the logbooks and enter the location into your passport. All 45 state parks in Georgia participate in the geocache programs, and you can earn GeoCoin prizes as you find more.
Nature Watching
Through the open woods, you'll find birdwatching with species such as bluebirds, nuthatch, osprey, woodpeckers, and warblers. Gopher tortoises and endangered indigo snakes crawl through the marshy lands. Fruit-bearing plants attract small mammals.
Flora and Fauna
Longleaf pine, saw palmetto, and wiregrass are bountiful in the pine flatlands. Large oaks, cherries, and hickories make up the open woods filled with birds. Staggerbush Lyonia, Florida soapberry, Myrtle oak, Chapman oak, and Carolina holly are abundant in the park. Fruit-bearing plants such as blueberries, muscadine grapes, sparkleberries, wax myrtle, and gull berries grow around the river. Small mammals like raccoons, armadillos, and feral hogs roam the area.
Hiking
Four miles of trails cut through Crooked River State Park. The Palmetto Trail takes you 1.5 miles through pine flatlands. The River Trail is just a short trek of a few hundred yards down the bluff and into the marsh, overlooking the Crooked River.
Boating
Get out on the river with your own watercraft or stop and rent a Jon boat, kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or aqua cycle at the park.
Swimming
Several sandy beach areas sit along the river shore for unsupervised swimming.
Biking
Bike rentals are available in the park for venturing across the paved and gravel area.
How to Get to
Crooked River State Park
Just north of St. Marys on Highway 40, Crooked River State Park sits just a few miles east of Interstate 95 in southern Georgia.
Entering Crooked River State Park
Parking is available in Crooked River State Park near the nature center, at the main entrance, by the mini golf course, and at the marina and boat dock. A fee of $5 per day per vehicle is required. Overnight camping guests need only pay the parking fee one time per stay. Annual passes are available for parking.
Aside from the parking fees, there is no charge for visiting Crooked River State Park.

Warmer temperatures make southern Georgia a perfect vacation spot all year long. Summer tends to be a little hot, with fall and spring being mild. Even in the winter, the weather is favorable for getting out on the river or birdwatching from the platforms.

You are welcome to bring your pet to the park with you. Pets must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet and supervised at all times. You should also note that pets are not allowed inside buildings and lodges or in swimming areas.
