Just west of the thriving city of Augusta, Georgia, A.H. Stephens State Park sits on 1,177 sprawling acres of gentle hills and rolling forests. This park was once home to A.H. Stephens, a former Georgia governor and an officer in the American Civil War. Visitors can tour Stephens' residence, also known as Liberty Hall, as well as the on-site Civil War museum. In addition to more than 20 miles of nature trails, you can also geocache, fish, boat, view the wildlife and learn more about the Civilian Conservation Corps.

RV Resorts & Campsites in A.H. Stephens State Park

This state park offers 25 campsites open to tents, trailers and RVs. You can expect both back-in and pull-through options, 50-amp electric service and water and sewer hookups. Other amenities include picnic tables, barbecue grills and fire rings. Dogs are allowed at most sites, and the comfort station is within easy walking distance. The level gravel pads can accommodate RVs up to 50 feet long.

What to Do at
A.H. Stephens State Park

The calm lakes and beautiful grounds of this state park make it a popular stop for outdoor recreation and relaxation. Spend your afternoons enjoying the volleyball court, horseshoe pit or playgrounds. You can also paddle, boat or canoe on the local lakes.

Fishing Fishing

Federal Lake is the largest lake at the park, and it's only open to cottage and group camp guests. On the other hand, Lake Buncombe is available to all anglers and boasts healthy populations of bluegill and bass. All fishing enthusiasts must have a valid Georgia fishing license and a ParkPass.

Geocaching Geocaching

A.H. Stephens State Park is one of the stops on the History Trail GeoTour. This adventure spans 19 historic sites across the state, requiring you to answer trivia questions to determine the cache's combination code. Each site has between three to five clues that you'll need to solve before heading to the final locked ammo canister.

Nature Watching Nature Watching

You may see white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, weasels, foxes, quail or brown snakes traveling through the underbrush in the forest. The commonly spotted brown thrasher is best known for its unique way of digging through the foliage and dirt to find insects. Be sure to keep an eye out for potential hazards like fire ants in the woods and snapping turtles near the lakes.

While this park isn't far from Atlanta, you don't have to worry about the light pollution impacting your stargazing. A.H. Stephens State Park offers ideal views of the nighttime sky and a full, unobstructed look at the celestial body. Several overnight spots border the lake, giving you the comfort and convenience of stargazing from your RV or cabin.

Hiking Hiking

The park has four miles of hiking trails and another 21 miles of horse riding trails that charge a fee. The horse-friendly trails are only open between Monday and Thursday. Those interested in the area's local history won't want to miss walking the partially paved Sunset Drive Nature Trail. It starts near the visitor center and takes you past several Civilian Conservation Corps buildings.

Boating

Lake Buncombe permits private boating as long as your watercraft doesn’t exceed 10 horsepower. There's one boat ramp on the water with a nearby parking area. You can also rent paddleboards, canoes, aqua cycles, paddle boats and trolling motors and batteries from the park.

How to Get to
A.H. Stephens State Park

A.H. Stephens State Park is 20 minutes away from Union Point and 30 minutes south of Washington. If you're heading from Greensboro, you'll want to drive east for about 18 miles on Union Point Highway to Crawfordville. From Warrenton, head north on the Atlantic Highway until it becomes US Highway 278. After approximately 25 minutes, you'll reach Crawfordville and will be able to follow the signs to the park.

Entering A.H. Stephens State Park

You'll find plenty of parking near the visitor center and park historic site. These lots are best suited to standard vehicles, trucks and motorcycles. If you're bringing a toy hauler or additional trailer, you can park it near the boat ramp or at your campsite. All visitors to A.H. Stephens State Park must have a ParkPass. The park is open every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. while the office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guests can check out the historic home during the weekend between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The last tour of the day is at 3:30 p.m.
