Located on the western side of Lake Whales Ridge, Highlands Hammock State Park has a diverse collection of plant and animal life. This place has more rare and endemic species than any other Florida state park. You'll see that everything is kept preserved as you walk the trails where wildlife roams beneath the towering oak trees. Some of the local species include black bears, Florida panthers, deer, alligators, and a variety of bird species. When you vacation at Highlands Hammock, which is 13 miles southwest of Avon Park and seven miles west of downtown Sebring, you'll love the warm temperatures, but consider bringing a jacket for the chilly nights.

Highlands Hammock State Park and the surrounding area have plenty of camping opportunities for both RVs and tents. While you can stay in a tent with very little room, a comfortable RV will keep you protected from the midday temperatures. Highlands Hammock State Park Campground
Highlands Hammock State Park has 143 single-family campsites, all equipped with water, electricity, and other amenities. This is an amazing campground if you want to be close to the action. The sites tend to fill up rather quickly, though, so be sure to reserve ahead of time. Fees for the family campground start at $22 per night, plus tax and a non-refundable $6.70 reservation fee.

Lake Placid Campground
Located 22 miles south of Highlands Hammock, Lake Placid Campground has 133 sites, and 21 of them provide a lakefront view. The sites have tropical and sub-tropical landscaping, plenty of room for slide-outs, awnings, and large rig maneuverability. They offer RV and boat storage for guests and residents year-round at the southwest corner of the park. For added comfort, all the sites are near clean restrooms and hot showers. The dog wash station and dog run are conveniently accessible for all pet-owner guests.

Whispering Pines Village
Whispering Pines Village is ideally situated in sunny Central Florida. They have long, wide back-in sites with plenty of room for multiple slide-outs. The park's amenities include a computer room and lending library, sparkling year-round pool, clubhouse with kitchen facilities, and so much more. The park is about 30 minutes from the Sebring International Raceway and a short distance from the state park.

Looking for a campground that only rents sites to individuals 55 and older? Bonnet Lake Campgrounds is a great option that's located less than two miles from downtown Sebring, Florida. Amenities include a heated swimming pool, pickleball court, horseshoe pits, and bocce ball court. They offer permanent sites as well as daily, weekly, and monthly options for short-term visitors 55 and over.

You can also take a one-hour tram ride to learn more about the state park.
How to Get to
Highlands Hammock State Park
From downtown Sebring, head northeast toward East Center Avenue. You'll exit the traffic circle onto South Ridge Drive. Continue onto Lakeview Drive, Highway 17. You'll take a slight right onto US-98 North/US Highway 27 South, then turn left onto Hammock Road. Your destination will be on the right.
