You're welcome to rent paddleboards, kayaks, sailboats and canoes from the well-stocked Anastasia Watersports. There are also three picnic pavilion areas, three accessible playgrounds, four bathhouses and an amphitheater that hosts weekly farmer's markets. Some of the accessible features here include free beach wheelchair rentals, elevated beach boardwalks and a convenient Mobi-Mat.
Inside Anastasia State Park
There’s plenty to do as you explore the maritime forests and shores of Anastasia State Park. Go fishing, spot local birds, or do some surfing in the water. Activities in the park include:
Birding: Thanks to a variety of habitats, there is also a variety of birds that live in the park. It’s one of the most important areas for beach-nesting birds on the eastern coast of Florida. It’s also along the eastern coastal flyway for migrating birds, so many of them stop off to eat and rest in the park before continuing their journey. The park is part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail.
Visit the Old Spanish Quarries: The Spanish Coquina Quarries in the park are the primary source of coquina, a variation of limestone that’s made up of sand and mollusk shells. The famous Castillo de San Marcos and other buildings in the Spanish colonial town of St. Augustine were made from coquina. The quarries are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Paddling: There are canoe and kayak launches in the park, and Anastasia Water Sports rents paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, and sail boats.
Geo-seeking: Many Florida parks have geocaches for visitors to find. Get off the beaten path and hunt for some treasures.
Surfing: You can surf along the shores of the park as well, and get a closer look at the park’s water wildlife.
Fishing
Anglers won't want to miss the opportunity to catch trout, black sea bass, flounder, mullet and reds. The main Salt Run area has a convenient fish-cleaning station. You can also venture out to the park's north end, but be sure to avoid the fragile marshes and dunes. Visitors over the age of 16 interested in fishing here must have a Florida fishing license.
Geocaching
Anastasia State Park is home to several traditional geocaches and EarthCaches. Some of these caches may require you to traverse the boardwalks and look up facts about the beautiful dunes. If you're searching for caches in containers, be sure to fully seal them against the rain when you're done so that future explorers can enjoy them.
Nature Watching
The park has several interpretive exhibits that share interesting info on animals like North Atlantic right whales and sea turtles. The beautiful salt marsh is full of tall grasses and shrubs that make perfect nesting areas for local waterfowl. Consider walking the Marsh Trail to see various shorebirds, turtles and even the occasional manatee.
Flora and Fauna
Anastasia State Park is one of the best stops on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. Stop by to see laughing gulls, black skimmers, wood storks, great blue herons, bald eagles, warblers and more. The tidal marsh is full of fish, crabs, dolphins and sea turtles. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the shifting dunes for a chance to spot the small and endangered Anastasia Island beach mouse.
Hiking
The most prominent route in the park is the Ancient Dunes Nature Trail. This primarily flat path travels over the old dunes and through a pleasantly shaded hammock. Some sections are uneven and may include hills or rough stairs. The trail will take you four miles one way down the stunning beach, giving you the chance to enjoy the vistas and search for shells.
Boating
Only sailboats are permitted in the Salt Run tidal marsh. It's essential to follow all posted speed and wake signs and avoid disturbing any of the delicate ecosystems. To rent a sailboat, you need to have previous sailing experience. Rentals are available from two hours before high tide until two hours after.
Swimming
Situated behind the Island Beach Shop and Grill, there's a designated swimming area with a lifeguard on duty during the summer. Be aware that even with a lifeguard there is some risk in ocean swimming like encountering rip tides. Surfboards and boogie boards are available for rent from the shop.
Biking
Bicyclists will adore the more than four miles of open beach as well as the additional public bike lanes along some of the park's main roads. Helmets are encouraged for all bikers and are required by law for those under the age of 16. Bike rentals start as low as $12.
