The Audubon Society has named Highline Lake State Park an important area for birds because of the thousands that migrate through the park every winter. However, this 160-acre reservoir attracts more than just bird watchers. People from throughout the Grand Valley come here to fish, paddleboard, canoe, kayak, sail, and water ski. Mountain bike enthusiasts also frequent the area for its great trails and natural terrain. Highline Lake State Park is very near Interstate 70 and is easy to reach from nearby Loma and Grand Junction, Colorado.

Ruby Horsethief Canyon

Regardless of when you decide to visit Highline Lake State Park, you can find many things to do. Watch for bald eagles and golden eagles making their nests overhead in the spring as they are part of the 200 species of birds spotted in the area. Catch rainbow and brown trout in the early spring and catfish and crappie throughout the rest of the year. With water temperatures staying about 80 degrees in the summer, this is a great place to go water skiing, boating, canoeing, and kayaking.
How to Get to
Highline State Park
It is easy to get to this park because of its proximity to Interstate 70. Get off I-70 at the Loma exit and turn onto Highway 139 North. Go six miles to Q Road and turn left when you reach 11.8 Road. Turn right and follow the road to the park’s entrance.
