- Wind Creek State Park
Alabama went huge in many ways when the state reopened Wind Creek State Park in 1982. Covering 1,445 acres, the park is the largest in the Alabama system. It sits on the western side of Lake Martin, a 44,000-acre reservoir on the Tallapoosa River, the largest reservoir in Alabama and one of the largest in the United States. The campground covers 320 acres and includes over 600 campsites, making it the largest publicly operated campground in the country. Visitors to the park find easy access to Alexander City, which lies only 7 miles north. The park enjoys a positive reputation amongst cities like Talladega and Montgomery, AL, whose citizens use the campground as a weekend getaway year-round.
