Oak Mountain State Park, located just south of Birmingham in Central Alabama, is Alabama's largest state park, comprising nearly 10,000 acres. The park, in addition to its beautiful scenery, features great family-friendly attractions like the Alabama Wildlife Center, the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center, and a well-maintained campground. The park also offers visitors a wide variety of awesome recreational activities like a golf course, a BMX track, and a scenic trail network spanning more than 50 miles.

For example, visitors can hike the extensive trail network, play a relaxing round at Oak Mountain Golf Course, or work on their accuracy at the park's archery range. Oak Mountain State Park is also home to several lakes, making it a popular destination for boating, paddling, swimming, and fishing. If you thought the camping opportunities were impressive, wait until you hear about the activities available to visitors within the state park. From watersports and golf, to hiking, horseback riding, boating and more – there’s something for absolutely everyone at Oak Mountain State Park!
Some of the most popular things to do within the state park include:
Archery : Fancy a spot of archery during your stay? The park also has an archery park within its grounds, offering activities such as recreational shooting, competitive tournaments and outdoor educational programming.
Golfing : Oak Mountain Golf Course is a public, 18-hole championship course which is repeatedly rated by Golf Digest to be among the top 50-75 public courses in the United States. Tee times should be reserved five days in advance. If you don’t own golf clubs (or forgot to bring yours), the pro shop rents golf clubs at a fee of $25.
Fishing : The state park is also home to two 85-acre lakes and one 60-acre lake, which is stocked with largemouth bass, bream, catfish and crappie to fish from. Tackle, bait, and other supplies are for sale at Flipside, but just keep in mind that State Law requires fishing licenses for both Alabama residents and non-residents.
Boating : You can also enjoy the lakes from a variety of water vessels and equipment, including pedal boats, kayaks, canoes, and standup paddleboards. Rental prices start at just $14 per hour and vessels can be rented from the Marina (located on Terrace Drive) or from Flipside Watersports (located on the lower back lake).
Hiking : Oak Mountain State Park has approximately 25 miles of hiking trails that people enjoy on a daily basis. These trails lead you throughout the park’s beautiful landscape and suit a variety of hiking levels – from beginners to the more experienced.
Swimming : Did you know the state park also offers two beaches for you to enjoy swimming, soaking up the sun, and playing in the sand? One is located on Terrace Drive (which is open to the general public) and there is one available for campground guests in the campground.
Fishing
One of the reservoirs at Oak Mountain State Park is a 60-acre lake that's inhabited by largemouth bass, bream, catfish, and crappie, making it a quality angling spot. The park also has tackle, bait, and other fishing supplies available for guests, but you will need an Alabama fishing license to cast your line.
Geocaching
Oak Mountain State Park recognizes geocaching as a great opportunity for park visitors of all ages, and guests are encouraged to participate in the unique activity by hiding and searching for caches.
Nature Watching
Many interesting wildlife species are known to inhabit Oak Mountain State Park. During your visit, you might see deer, raccoons, opossums, and other small mammals. The area is also home to wild turkeys, turtles, and snakes.
Stargazing
Oak Mountain State Park is a fantastic destination for stargazing, and there are several quality spots to set up a telescope. However, since the park closes at 7 p.m. each night, you'll only be able to observe the night sky if you're camping overnight.
Flora and Fauna
For visitors who like to search for and identify unique plant species, Oak Mountain State Park is a cool spot to check out. Recently, two new rare plant species have been discovered in the park: Alabama sandstone oak and Georgia aster. While Alabama sandstone oak is rather mundane looking, Georgia aster is a vibrant purple flower.
Hiking
With around 50 miles of scenic trails to explore, Oak Mountain State Park is a popular place to go for a scenic hike. Many of the park's most popular routes lead to the magnificent Peavine Falls, a 65-foot waterfall located at the top of Oak Mountain. Most of the hiking trails within the park are also suitable for horseback riding.
Boating
Oak Mountain State Park is home to a marina, three lakes, and a Flipside Watersports shop. Visitors can head out on the water in various types of watercraft, including kayaks, canoes, pedal boats, and stand-up paddleboards. Boat rentals are available at the marina and start at only $14 per hour.
Swimming
Visitors to Oak Mountain State Park have access to two lovely beaches, although one of them is only available for campground guests. During the summer, it's very tempting to take a refreshing dip in the park's lakes.
Biking
In addition to riding at the popular Mountain BMX Track, mountain bikers can ride along most or all of the nature trails that wind through Oak Mountain State Park.
How to Get to
Oak Mountain State Park
To get to Oak Mountain State Park from Birmingham, travel south on I-65 until you come to exit 246 for AL-119/Cahaba Valley Rd. Take the exit, then turn right onto AL-119 S. Take a left onto Oak Mountain Park Rd, and when you come to the traffic circle, take the third exit onto John Findlay Dr. Turn right onto Terrace Dr, which will take you into the park.
Entering Oak Mountain State Park
The entrance fee for Oak Mountain State Park is $5 for guests age 12 and up, $2 for children age 4 to 11, and $2 for seniors age 62 or older. Children under the age of 4, active military, retired military, and veterans can always enter for free. There is a substantial amount of parking available in the park.
