- Monte Sano State Park
The summit of Monte Sano Mountain is divided into two Alabama state entities. On the west side is Monte Sano Nature Preserve, which runs down the west slope and serves as a backdrop for Huntsville, AL, immediately west of the mountain. The eastern section is Monte Sano State Park, a 2,140-acre area that runs from the top down the mountain's east slope. In the 19th century, the mountain drew diphtheria, cholera, and yellow fever sufferers to a sanitarium perched on the summit. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) renovated the remains of the sanitarium and built cabins, trails, and overlooks to take advantage of the incredible views of the Tennessee Valley 300 feet below the mountain's summit. Today, the state park draws visitors from many sections of the country, including such urban areas as Chattanooga, TN, and Birmingham, AL.
