Popular Tourist Attractions

The Lighthouses

Upper Peninsula has 40 lighthouses standing guard over treacherous waters; twelve of which are open for the public to visit. The top-rated lighthouses to visit in this region are Eagle Harbor Lighthouse and Museum, Point Iroquois Lighthouse, and Peninsula Point. Eagle Harbor Lighthouse and Museum is a working lighthouse located in Keweenaw County, and has guided mariners traversing Lake Superior for the past 150 years. Peninsula Point Lighthouse, built in 1864 to aid sailing ships, is located in Hiawatha National Forest at the southern tip of the Stonington Peninsula.

Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum

The Great Lakes Shipwreck is located at the Whitefish Point Light Station, 11 miles north of Paradise in Chippewa County. Artifacts from shipwrecks from the Whitefish Point Underwater Preserve and the bell from the wreck of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald are exhibited in the museum. Apart from the museum, you can also visit the light tower, fog signal building, lookout tower, boathouse, and much more.

Mackinac Island, Bridge and Fort

Mackinac Island is an island and resort area covering 3.8 square miles. It is located in Lake Huron, between the state’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas. To combine both, Mackinac Bridge was opened in 1957. It is the world’s 16th longest bridge in total suspension, and is known as the “Big Mac” or “Mighty Mac”. Though the Island and the Bridge are generally considered the center attractions, the Fort Mackinac, constructed on the southern bluff as a military compound, is worth checking out too!
