Present-day Navarre in Florida started as a small settlement called Eagan in 1874. The area was originally a post office location, and it was named for John Eagan, a local postmaster. At that time, the small town had about 40 families. Despite the discontinuation of the post office in September 1884, the families continued living in the small town. Decades later, Colonel Guy Wyman of the U.S. Army met and fell in love with a French nurse called Noelle.

Nevertheless, immigration policies in that era could not allow him to take Noelle back to the U.S. as a partner. To solve the issue, Wyman adopted Noelle as his child and took her to Florida, where he purchased a large tract of land in Eagan. Noelle named their property Navarre after the Spanish region near France. Wyman planned the Navarre townsite in 1925. Unfortunately, the couple did not develop the area too much, as they were forced to sell the property during the Great Depression period. The property is currently part of Navarre Park.

Today, Navarre is a small town with a population of over 35,000. While in Navarre, visit Navarre Beach Park. Besides offering swimming, picnicking and surfing opportunities, the park has a 1,545-foot-long pier suitable for fishing. If you are an animal lover, Gulf Breeze Zoo is nearby and features over 800 species of wildlife from all parts of the world. You will also want to explore this area’s eateries, including Scooter’s Fish House, Cactus Flower Café of Navarre and Alphy’s Family Restaurant.
