Theodore Roosevelt Island National Memorial

Take a break from the fast-paced environment of Washington, D.C., with a visit to Theodore Roosevelt Island National Memorial. Tucked into a bend in the Potomac River, just opposite the Kennedy Center and Georgetown, this small island is a quiet, car-free oasis. In the 1700s and 1800s, the island held a private plantation, a Civil War hospital, and a recreational area. The ruins of the Mason mansion, which once played host to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and King Louis of France, still stand. As you walk through the forest on the flat hiking trails, it's easy to forget that you're in the middle of a major metro area — the island is a great place to take a break on a trip to the nation's capital.
