Stonewall National Monument

Learn about the long, hard fight for LGBTQ+ rights in the United States at the Stonewall National Monument, a park that encompasses more than 7 acres in Manhattan, including Christopher Park and the legendary Stonewall Inn. On June 28, 1969, the police raided the inn, which was operating as a gay bar. Instead of instilling fear in the community, the raid prompted days of demonstrations against unfair police treatment. This unprecedented uprising was a turning point in the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement. Today, you can walk the same streets, visit the Stonewall Inn, and learn about the rocky road to equality. Barack Obama designated the area as a national monument in 2016, so many of the associated sites are still in development.

Sightseeing

  • Stonewall Inn

The Stonewall Inn, a National Historic Landmark, is the most important site at the Stonewall National Monument. After the NYPD Vice Squad Public Morals Division raided the bar in 1969, a massive crowd formed outside in protest. The scene turned violent, leading to six days of protests that sparked nationwide organizations for LGBTQ+ civil rights. The inn served many different purposes over the ensuing decades. In 2007, this modest two-story building returned to its roots and reopened as a gay bar, club, and event venue — visitors aged 21 and over can attend one of the many events and performances.
