Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial

The Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial marks the site of the most deadly home-front disaster of World War II. On July 17, 1944, two Navy cargo ships exploded during the loading process, killing 320 sailors and civilians. Two-thirds of the sailors were African American, and the incident led to a mutiny trial and, eventually, the desegregation of the armed forces. Today, you can visit the site of the blast to honor the victims and discover its far-reaching effects in U.S. military history. The memorial is located in the Military Ocean Terminal Concord (formerly the Concord Naval Weapons Station), so it's only open for ranger-led tours on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Call or email to make a reservation for these free tours at least two weeks before your trip.
