Why We Love Travel

Suggest a Local Tip

From meeting new people to experiencing new sights, sounds, and smells – is there anything more exciting or rejuvenating than a break from the day-to-day mundanity? Traveling is an excellent way to immerse yourself in a new culture, setting, or way-of-life, but the best part is this: you don’t have to venture far from home to enjoy what this world has to offer.

Whether your journey takes you across your own city, to an unexplored part of your state, or even to the other side of the world, there’s no doubt you will still learn a lot about your surroundings – and yourself – along the way.

Benefits of Traveling Locally

While the culture an hour away from your home might not be drastically different from what you’re used to, you can still gain a deepened sense of appreciation for where you’ve laid your roots. Plus, traveling locally has a lot of benefits:

More cost-effective. Local travel is certainly a budget-friendly way to explore! Many activities and parks are free or have a low cost of entry. For day trips, you can also pack your own meals to save.

leaf-solid

Eco-friendly way to travel. Travel is hard on the environment, but putzing around your area is more sustainable than air travel.

Shape

Quick trips. Getting out locally means you can do it more often! Long weekend trips are a lot easier to take when the destination is a short drive away.

map-solid

Easy to plan. Preparing your itinerary for a local getaway will likely save you some time and stress.

key-solid

More convenient. Especially if you have little ones, sticking close to home may be much more convenient than far-off destinations. If you forget something, have an emergency, or need to cut the trip short, being closeby definitely has its benefits.

Parks in Prescott Valley, Arizona

Those who make their home in this part of Arizona know that they’re blessed to be surrounded by a great diversity of wild spaces, from rippling red rocks to broad expanses of high desert forest. Here are some of the best state and national parks and preserves in the Prescott Valley, AZ area.

Dead Horse Ranch State Park

Despite its morose name, Dead Horse Ranch State Park is teeming with life, including lush foliage and incredible local wild animals. A working ranch for decades, today, this park draws visitors for hiking, kayaking, bird watching, camping, and more; it also offers two fishing lagoons with boat launches for those looking for a watery oasis in the desert.

Prescott National Forest

Covering an expanse of more than 1.25 million acres, Prescott National Forest is one of the wildest places left in the entire continental United States, let alone Arizona. Along with its plethora of outdoor recreational opportunities, the national forest also holds historical significance: it was here that Sam Miller panned for gold before being attacked by a cougar, here where General Cook raised his flag during the Indian Wars.

Red Rock State Park

Although it might only be a few decades old — which is young, in the grand scheme of Arizona’s distinguished state parks — Red Rock State Park holds a vast and varied section of the desert countryside, covering almost 300 acres and displaying some of the most unique geographical formations on this side of the Mississippi. A popular spot amongst those living in or visiting Sedona, the park is also only an hour or so from Prescott Valley, so take advantage of your close proximity to this sought-after destination!

Slide Rock State Park

From its humble origins as an apple orchard to its current status as one of the most commonly visited state parks in Arizona, Slide Rock State Park offers a unique outdoor getaway opportunity for locals — particularly thanks to its namesake rock, which does indeed act as a kind of natural slip-and-slide during Arizona’s brutal summer heat. Along with swimming in the creek, the park also offers hiking trails for those looking to keep their feet firmly planted on the ground.

Hiking in Prescott Valley, Arizona

Red Rock Canyon

This part of Arizona is prized by people from across the state — and the country — for its incredible hiking opportunities. Here are some of the best trails for getting your boots on the ground in Prescott Valley and the surrounding areas.

Lynx Lake Loop Trail

Meandering the two-and-a-half miles that create the jagged shoreline of this beautiful body of water, Lynx Lake Loop Trail is one of the most popular in the Prescott Valley area, and for good reason. The beautiful waterside views are matched by a mostly flat terrain suitable for beginners as well as trail runners and bikers, and it’s also a good trail for bringing along the dog or kids.

Constellation Loop

With gently undulating hills making up about 200 feet of elevation change along Constellation Loop’s two-and-a-half mile length, this trail counts as an easy-to-moderate endeavor that offers beautiful scenery and shrubbery to make it worth your while. Located close to town, you’ll get both urban and countryside views, and leashed dogs are also welcome to wander along the path.

Watson Lake and Flume Trail

Tucked right into nearby Watson Lake Park, Watson Lake and Flume Trail is an easy-to-moderate hike of just under five miles that sees just 400 feet of elevation change along the way. Along with a beautiful and unique lake, studded with characteristic northern Arizona rock formations, the trail also meanders through ample wildflowers and greenery, making for a scenic breath of fresh air.

Spruce Mountain via Groom Creek Loop (#307)

A lengthy and challenging hike that belongs firmly in the upper echelons of the “moderate” category, Spruce Mountain via Groom Creek Loop (#307) runs just shy of 10 miles and sees about 1,600 feet in elevation change along the way. For those willing to take the challenge, rewards include sweeping panoramic views and tall high-desert pines. The trail is also popular among mountain bikers and equestrians!

Little Granite Mountain Loop Trail

Coming in at just under 10 miles in length and seeing more than 1,800 feet in elevation gain over the course of that time, Little Granite Mountain Loop Trail is certainly a challenge — but one that’s well worth taking on, particularly for those looking for incredible views. Best used from September to May because of the brutal temperatures brought along by Arizona summers, this steep climb doesn’t offer much in the way of shade, but is dog friendly for those hoping to bring their pooches!

Serving up delicious options at affordable prices, this is the perfect place to grab lunch or dinner when you’re hungry, in a hurry, and not willing to compromise on quality.

You can’t go wrong either way!
