Omnia Stovetop Oven; Is It Worth It? Recipes and Review from Slow Roamers

Camping Cuisine

Megan a full-time traveler @SlowRoamers, shares her personal experience using the Omnia Stovetop Oven.

Ever been on a road trip or out camping and had a craving for some freshly baked goodies? As a foodie living on the road, one of the toughest parts about trading in a house or apartment for a small camper van is saying goodbye to my beloved oven. That is, until I discovered the Omnia Oven. This ingenious and compact metal contraption, resembling a bundt pan, has revolutionized my mobile culinary adventures.

About the Omnia Stovetop Oven

The Omnia Oven is designed to mimic the functionality of a traditional oven, making it possible to bake, roast, and cook just about anything on a stovetop element. It consists of three main components: a bottom stainless steel base that distributes heat evenly, a central aluminum bundt-shaped baking tray that holds your food and circulates heat through the center hole, and a lid that traps the heat, ensuring thorough and consistent cooking. Omnia also offers a ton of accessories to suit your baking needs, like a silicone insert, muffin tray and perforated baking tray to name a few.

My Experience Using the Omnia Stovetop Oven

I use my Omnia at least once a week in my camper van. It’s perfect for baking up sweets for my partner and me, and it also serves as a fun party trick when traveling with friends: “Guys, I baked us a cake!” As well, the Omnia is invaluable when a kind local offers their shower or laundry machine and I don’t want to show up empty-handed. In the past, saying goodbye to my oven at home meant also saying goodbye to my sourdough starter. Now, with the Omnia, my starter (Chad) travels with us, allowing me to bake sourdough breads and cakes on the road.

BONUS: Omnia Cinnamon Buns Recipe Dough

  • 2 and 3/4 cups (340g) AP flour
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp (40 g) melted butter
  • 3/4 cup (180ml) milk (I use soy)
  • 1 packet (2 tsp) of instant yeast
  • 1 egg

Filling:

  • 3 tbsp softened butter
  • 1/3 cup (70 g) brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp cinnamon

Icing:

  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 tsp milk
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (or to desired consistency)

Process:

Make the dough: In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt together. On the stove or in the microwave heat the milk and butter until lukewarm (110°F). Add the packet of instant yeast and whisk until dissolved. Add this mixture to dry ingredients, add your egg, and stir until a soft dough forms. In your bowl (because we don’t like to dirty extra dishes) knead your dough for 5-10 minutes until a nice dough ball is formed. Cover and let rise in a warm place (on the dash) while you get your fillings ready.

Make the filling: In a bowl, combine butter, sugar, and cinnamon into a paste.

Roll out dough, add your filling, and roll it up: Once the dough has had at least 15-30 minutes to rise, roll it out on a floured work surface. You want to make an 8” x 14” rectangle. Now gently smooth out your filling across the whole surface. Starting from the longer (14-inch) edge, roll the dough into a log and slice it into 8 equal pieces.

  • Rise: Grease your Omnia Oven, or use the silicone insert and place your rolls inside, leaving room in between each roll for them to expand. Let your buns rise for 60-90 minutes.
  • Bake: These rolls take 1 hour to bake on my propane stove at low. In a regular oven they should take 30-40 minutes at 350°F. While the rolls are cooking,
  • Icing: While your buns bake, prepare your icing by adding all ingredients to a bowl and whisking together. Once the buns are done cooking, let them cool for as long as you can stand, drizzle your icing on top, and enjoy!
