North Algodones Dunes Wilderness Area

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for 1 in every 10 acres of land in the U.S.

Established in 1946, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) oversees almost 250 million acres of land in the United States. These public lands include over 200 wilderness areas. The North Algodones Dunes Wilderness Area is located in southern California, representing a respectable portion of the BLM wilderness territories. Encompassing nearly 26,000 acres, these massive dunes offer a more laid-back alternative to the nearby dune systems. Because of its designation as a wilderness, the North Algodones are not open to motor vehicle traffic. Walking and horseback riding are permitted, however. There are no fees for daytime visiting. However, weekly permits are required for extended stays.
