Explore Laurel Hill, Florida, in an RVshare RV Rental
Laurel Hill is a small town with a rich history. The Laurel Hill area was one of the first American settlements in Florida, and some records show that an English-speaking community existed here during the American Revolution when Florida was still under Spanish rule. Around 1821, this community was named Almirante, and it existed under this name well into the 1880s. During this time, the community gained access to the Yellow River Railroad, and the town turned into a small, but booming, lumber and farming city.
In 1905, Almirante was renamed Laurel Hill after a large laurel tree that was at the very center of the city’s land. Up until 1915, Laurel Hill was the largest city in Okaloosa County, FL, but after an economic downfall in the early 1920s, the city’s only bank had to close, and the city was downgraded to an unincorporated community. In 1953, though, Laurel Hill was finally reincorporated as an official city once again, and it has been slowly growing back ever since.
The Laurel Hill School has a hobo for its mascot, the only school with this mascot in the United States. In honor of the school’s teams, Laurel Hills holds a Hobo Festival annually, and you can join in the festivities if you’re around the city in October.
When visiting Laurel Hill, be sure to check out the High Point Honey Co., a local honey farm that you can tour. You may also want to stop by Gene Clary Park, a small community park with a playground and benches that make for a good picnicking spot.
