This park is popular with locals for birdwatching from spring through fall. Sites are first come, first served and any empty spot is available. Dubois County park is located in Huntingburg, less than 20 miles from Holiday World & Splashin Safari, but in a different time zone.
The park sits upon the county fairgrounds and consists of woodlands, old field habitat, wetlands around two small lakes, and grasslands. Birdwatchers commonly see warblers, vireos, thrushes, woodpeckers, and sparrows during migrations in the spring and fall. Kentucky Warblers, Yellow-breasted Chats, Summer Tagers, and Worm-eating Warblers have also been spotted. Nesting birds can be found in spring and summer.
“first come” basis. Pull in and pick the site you want. Any empty site is available. This is a nice quiet family park. There are several play areas and a basketball court as well as covered shelter houses. It fills up quickly with local campers so it’s best to arrive early in the week. The park also offers an interpretive center with instructiol programs, walks, and waysides. Walking tours offer great opportunities to see local wildlife and birdwatching. Why you’ll love Lincoln State Park The ture programs, recreation programs, cultural sites, exhibits, and interpretive center here offer good information for inquisitive minds. Additiolly, there is a museum and artifact/petroglyph view less than a mile away. There is a playground for the younger set and plenty to interest older kids and adults.
“We have stayed here three times in our travels around the country! This is my favorite park! We have only ever been here on October and it is absolutely beautiful and peaceful. The leaves are yellow, orange, purple ….exquisite! This last time it rained and we were in our Motorola looking at the lake enjoying the view…..very cozy. The people are so nice! We will come again perhaps a different season. We camped at Lincoln State Park in a Motorhome.”– Brandl, RV Park Reviews

When you come to camp at F. D. Roosevelt State Park, you can expect to enjoy a wide variety of activities. Enjoy birding, fishing, educational programs and geocaching. You may like to go hiking or horseback riding as well.
F. D. Roosevelt State Park is a great place for a picnic by day and for stargazing by night. If the weather is warm, enjoy swimming, boating, canoeing, and kayaking. This is one of the premier Columbus campsites in the area.
“This is such a beautiful and large park! There are many, many hiking options, camping and look out points. The historic landmarks are an additional perk. The trails are well marked and clean. I’m surprised how underrated this park is considering how much there is to enjoy. There are not many options for food or groceries nearby, so be sure to bring what you need.” – Lindsey, Google Review

The stunning natural setting and 66-acre lake will have you falling in love with Scales Lake Park. Visitors enjoy outdoor activities such as a nice sandy beach for swimming or sunbathing, boating, hiking, fishing, a water slide and other outdoor activities. The surprise here is the petting zoo that is sure to charm children and adults alike. Only 25 miles away from Holiday World, this park would be a great home base at the end of a long day at the water park.
After a long day at Holiday World & Splashin Safari, you’ll enjoy settling down here. The giant water slide extends the excitement of the park, and the sandy beach makes a great place to relax. Kids will also enjoy getting up close and personal with the animals at the petting zoo.
“Nice campground with a big fishing and swimming lake, playgrounds, shelter houses, four rental cottages and an enclosed pavilion available to rent. The only negative about this park is that the sites are gravel and there’s very little of it. The area around the campers are very loose dirt that tracks into the camper. It would have been much worse had it been rainy and turned to mud. We camped at Scales Lake Park in a Travel Trailer.” Kc9mls, RV Park Reviews.

The Indian-Celina Lakes Recreation Area is a tranquil resting place in the Hoosier National Forest. Both the 152-acre Indian and the 164-acre Celina Lakes are close by, offering boating, fishing, hiking, and tours of the historic Rickenbaugh house site. This natural respite is only 25 miles from Holiday World.
This is a great park for getting back to nature and finding a quiet space. It is set in dense forest with plenty of privacy. The Rickenbaugh House historic center is a great place to spend a little time, then take a walk along the 1 mile Rickenbaugh Interpretive Trail or the Two Lakes Loop National Recreation Trail that circles the lakes.
“One of the prettiest parks I have ever been in. Excellent experience in my 27 foot Class A. Very friendly host guided me into my level, long site, albeit surrounded by poison ivy. Then he brought me some tomatoes from his (nearby home) garden. A nice treat. Interior roadways are nicely paved but narrow, but navigable. Electric only. Limited air antenna reception, but I sure didn’t care, it was so beautiful.

This city park provides recreational and educational activities for all ages. Set on 170 acres, it offers many recreational opportunities and is conveniently located to town and nearby activities. The Park features a large water park available for an extra fee.
You’ll love the Burdette Park Aquatic Center. It features an Olympic size pool with two diving boards, and another family pool with two water slides. There is also a children’s pool with a floating aligator. Smaller children will enjoy the interactive Spray Park. Rent a raft for a lazy float or enjoy snacks from the three concession areas. This park could give Splashin Safari some competition.
“We make frequent trips to Evansville to visit family and on this last trip we discovered Burdette Park. We were very pleasantly surprised. The pros? 1) Very close to everything you could possibly need but far enough away to be in the country, 2) Roads are paved nicely, 3) 20,30 & 50 amp service at each spot, 4) paved sites, 5) very quiet, 6) plenty of room between sites, 7) the manager is the absolute best, 8) Water park, BMX park, trails, fun park on premises, 9) Bath house is very nice, 10) wooded, 11) very private. Cons? 1) landscaping could be better, 2) roads around campers sites very narrow. Picnic tables are very old and brittle. Landscaping was sort of ragged but grass was cut. No problems with electric at all. Some sites have sewer but there’s a very nice dump station at the entrance. There is a great pizza place within a mile that delivers and the water park is huge and beautiful…very inviting. We really loved our stay here. Very few mosquitoes so that was a definite plus. Also, camping park is small so getting a site could prove difficult in the summer. We will be staying here quite often…it’s our new home away from home. We camped at Burdette Park in a Travel Trailer.” – John Merrell 1986, RV Park Reviews
The John James Audubon State Park is a bit of a drive at 63 miles away from the Holiday World & Splashin Safari; but, for nature lovers, it is worth the drive. In addition to great birdwatching, the park houses a museum that interprets the life and work of John James Audubon. The galleries tell the Audubon story and displays a complete set of his book, “The Birds of America.” There is also a nature center with a wildlife observation room, Audubon Theater, and Discovery & Learning Center. Several hiking trails, a golf course, and tennis courts round out the recreational opportunities.
This park is host to many species of birds and waterfowl and many hiking trails to encounter them. It is perfect for bird-watching and wildlife photography. Catch sight of a bald eagle raising its young, or watch the Great Blue Heron, Green Heron and Belted Kingfishers as they fish for their dinner along the lake shoreline. You can also enjoy nature on the lake in a rented canoe, kayak, or pedal boat, or go fishing in the lake.
“Audubon State Park has a lot to offer: camping, cabins, lake, golf course, and the museum. The campground, however, shows wear. It’s a small campground, crammed next to a busy highway at the park’s entrance. Many sites were deeply shaded and had paved pads, but the pads weren’t very wide and some are quite short. Companion vehicle parking is available with some sites on a separate paved pad. Not sure that detail is noted on the reservation form, so it might be best to call. One bath house present and a small, one-hole dump station. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon, departed late Monday morning and never saw a host to check us in. There might have been camp wifi, but we didn’t have the code. We paid for our night via the after hours drop box. Parking at the museum is limited, but it’s a short walk from the campground. Interior roads are quite narrow, so it’d be best to drive a tow around the park. We used this campground as an overnight stop because we had a favorable impression when we stayed at the cabins 10 years ago. Now I’m not so sure I’d return again with an RV due to the cramped and noisy conditions and overall wear of the property. We camped at John James Audubon State Park in a Motorhome.” – Flying Mantis, RV Park Reviews
