First on our list is Mackinac Island in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Many describe a visit to this island as an “escape to another world,” and we have to admit, that is exactly what it feels like. Not only does the place have a completely unique culture, but because there are no cars on the island, it also seems as though you’ve been transported back in time when you visit.
While in Mackinac Island, we highly recommend trying some of the island’s famous fudge, visiting the historic forts there, taking a carriage ride, and strolling the streets to admire the Victorian homes and buildings and take in the unique charm surrounding you. Because you can’t take vehicles onto the island, there isn’t an option to park your RV there. That said, there are plenty of camping options nearby, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a place to stay. Just be sure to book it in advance, as campgrounds do fill up in the summer months!

New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans is another one of those US cities that leaves you feeling as though you’ve stepped into another place entirely. The city has a vibrant cultural scene that pulls from both French and southern American culture in a way that is completely unique. This colorful culture was born from the city’s rich and interesting history, something that is well worth learning about.
During your time in New Orleans, make sure to walk around the French Quarter and take in the many sights there. You’ll find beautiful architecture, amazing street performers, and a few museums focusing on the history of the city. Be sure to check out the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park to learn about the art form that was born in NOLA.
You’ll also want to make a point of trying some local cuisine! Crawfish, bananas foster, jambalaya, gumbo, and beignets and chicory coffee from Cafe du Monde are all good picks.

Seeing as visitors are not allowed to drive vehicles on Catalina Island, you will not be able to camp in an RV on the Island. Instead, we recommend parking your RV on the mainland and visiting for the day (or for a single overnight in a tent).

Looking for a little taste of Germany? Leavenworth, Washington is a quaint little town that offers just that. This lovely little place has a wonderful Bavarian-inspired design. The buildings are like something out of a fairytale, and you might just believe you’ve fallen into a storybook as you stroll down the streets.
Strolling the streets here certainly is fun, but it’s far from the only thing to do. You’ll also want to enjoy some of the town’s delicious German food, explore the strange but wonderful Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum, and if you can, visit during one of the annual festivals to experience German art forms.
Nearby camping options amidst the stunning Cascade Mountains
Camping is definitely the way to go when visiting Leavenworth. Not only will you be able to park close to the action, but you’ll also be surrounded by the beautiful Cascade Mountains. We can’t think of many more beautiful places to camp.

Helen, Georgia
Another fantastic place to find some German culture, the town of Helen, Georgia is worth visiting if you happen to find yourself in the southeast. This adorable Alpine village is nestled in among the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers opportunities for admiring Bavarian architecture, enjoying German foods, and more.

Sitka, Alaska
Feeling extra adventurous? Why not head up to Alaska? Alaska is about as different as it gets without actually leaving the US, and if you drive up from the mainland, you will actually get to experience another country when you drive through Canada.
When you arrive in Alaska, be sure to make a stop in Sitka. This amazing little town has a rich history. The Russian influence is apparent at this, the former capital of Russian America, and the indigenous culture is also still going strong. Together, these two cultures have combined to create something completely unique. Learn about the Sitka culture (and do some wildlife viewing) at Sitka National Historical Park.

Whether you drive an RV up to Alaska or rent one when you arrive, you will need a place to park it. Not to worry! There are some great options for RV parking near Sitka.
First, there are two campgrounds with hookups located in town: Sealing Cove Boat Harbor RV Parking and Sitka Sportsman’s Association RV Park. If you’re looking for something more scenic, head to Starrigavan Campground in Tongass National Forest for dry camping spots in a peaceful setting.
Solvang, California
Heading back down to California, there is the beautiful Danish-inspired town of Solvang. This place is the ideal place to get a little taste of Danish culture and the fact that it’s in the heart of wine country is a major bonus (make sure to take advantage of this with some tours and tastings).
Honestly, one would likely be totally happy just to walk around this charming village and take in the sights. (The architecture is amazing!) That said, there are some must-dos while in Solvang. For one thing, you will want to ride the wooden horse-drawn Solvang Trolley. Munching on authentic Danish pastries is another must. Finally, if you can manage it, try to visit during Solvang Danish Days for even more amazing culture.

Campgrounds in and around Solvang are plentiful. In fact, you might even find yourself feeling overwhelmed by all the options.
Our top picks? We think Sun Outdoors Santa Barbara is pretty fantastic for those who enjoy a full service RV park. Refugio State Beach is another wonderful option, as it puts you very close to the beach, Solvang itself, wineries, and more—and the price to stay is relatively affordable.
Holland, Michigan
The aptly named Holland, Michigan is a great place to go for a bit of Dutch culture in the US. This gorgeous little town features windmills, wooden shoes, and tulips, and is everything you’d expect an old fashioned Dutch village to be.
While in Holland, you really must visit the Windmill Island Gardens to check out the classic windmills, along with the Dutch street organ, Dutch carousel, and gorgeous grounds there. Shopping downtown will give you a chance to admire the beautiful Dutch-inspired architecture while picking up unique goods, and you can finish off the day with authentic Dutch food at Dutch Brothers Restaurant. Of course, visiting during the famous Tulip Time festival would make your time in Holland even better!

Because Holland is located right by Lake Michigan, finding beautiful camping spots near the town is a cinch. Not only that, you’ll also find plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation to round out your Michigan camping experience.

Pella, Iowa
Another wonderful place to visit if you’d like a taste of Dutch heritage, Pella, Iowa is a small town that is big on charm. Here, you will find authentic Dutch food and a historical village area with a working windmill and a beautiful clock with mechanical figures.
We highly recommend allowing an entire afternoon to wander the aforementioned historical village and see the windmill and clock. During your time in the area, you might also want to visit the Scholte House Museum and Vermeer Museum and Global Pavilion. Of course, the annual Tulip Time Festival adds another level of fun to the whole experience, so try to plan your visit so it occurs during the event.

Wondering where to stay while visiting Pella? You actually have a few awesome options. Our favorites are the state parks and recreation areas nearby, as they allow you to camp in a natural environment.
Some of the best recreation area campgrounds near Pella are run by the Army Corps of Engineers. These include North Overlook Campground, Wallashuck, Howell Station, and others. Elk Rock State Park is another wonderful spot and Roberts Creek County Park has some nice camping as well.
Montpelier, Vermont
Heading up into New England, you’ll eventually come to Vermont’s capital city, Montpelier. The European influence on this town is very apparent from the moment you arrive, and you’ll find little splashes of European culture scattered here and there throughout the town.
One of the best ways to learn about the sculpture of any place is to explore the history there. For this reason, we highly recommend visiting Montpelier’s historic sites during your visit. Museums such as the Vermont Historical Society Museum and T.W. Wood Art Gallery might also give you a nice taste of the heritage here.
Of course, you’ll also want to try some unique local foods and drinks such as Vermont cheese, black IPA, and maple cream pie.

Montpelier is set in the gorgeous Green Mountains. What does this mean for you? Beautiful camping opportunities, of course! From luxury campgrounds to more primitive camping in the woods, the Green Mountains offer a bit of everything.
For those looking to be close to town with all the luxuries, Lazy Lions Campground is the place to go. That said, we also love Allis State Park or Little River State Park for an escape into nature.
Ouray, Colorado
Last but not least, we must mention Ouray, Colorado. This little town is known as the “Switzerland of America,” and when you see the mountainous backdrop that surrounds the town on three sides, you’ll understand why. While the town doesn’t actually have any Swiss heritage, it is just far enough off the beaten path to allow you to feel as though you’ve traveled to a far-off land.
Things to do in Ouray include ice climbing and skiing in winter, and hiking in the summer. The Ouray Hot Springs are within walking distance of Main Street and are amazing all year long. Local food can be found at places like Ouray Brewery, Mr. Grumpy Pants Brewing, Silver Eagle Saloon, and Timberline Deli, and it’s well worth catching a show at the historic 1888 Wright Opera House.
