When we started RVing full-time, we quickly learned that it doesn’t take a full remodel or expensive gadgets to make RV life easier. It’s the small, budget-friendly upgrades that often bring the most peace of mind, convenience, and comfort.
12 affordable upgrades that made a huge difference for our family on the road:
1. Camco RV Scissor Jack Drill Adapter Socket
Cranking stabilizers by hand used to be one of our least favorite setup chores. Switching to a stabilizer drill adapter bit on our power drill was a total game-changer. Setup is now quicker, easier, and no one has to wrestle with the old scissor jack crank handle. These days, our two boys actually argue over who gets to put the stabilizers down—proof of how much easier it really is. Best of all, the Camco RV Scissor Drill Adapter only costs around $10 at most stores or online retailers. So if you travel with a drill be sure to grab one of these as it’s easily one of the simplest and cheapest upgrades you can add to your camping adventures.
2. Tire Pressure Caps
Blowouts are one of the biggest risks on the road, and keeping tires in check is essential. Tire pressure caps are an inexpensive and super helpful upgrade! Only about $10 for a pack and it lets us quickly see if tires are in the green and ready to go. No need to fuss with a tire pressure gauge at every stop. We’ve even caught screws in our tires, and noticing a cap in the yellow immediately alerted us to a pressure loss. They’re inexpensive, simple to install, and give us peace of mind every time we tow. Check them out here!
3. Rubber Wheel Chocks
Stability and safety start with something as small as wheel chocks. We’ve driven over and crushed so many of the cheap plastic yellow ones, and replacing them each time was frustrating. Switching to heavy-duty rubber wheel chocks was a game-changer. They grip better, hold up far longer, and give us confidence that our trailer isn’t moving an inch once we’re parked. At around $16 for a 2-pack, they’re a little more than the plastic versions but well worth the peace of mind and long-term durability.
4. Camco Fasten RV Leveling Blocks
When we first hit the road full-time, we didn’t think we’d ever need leveling blocks. Boy, were we wrong! Who would have thought campsites were so… uneven? lol rookie mistake! Making sure your camper is level is important not just for your water pump, but also so all the fresh water in your holding tank is usable. And honestly, who wants to sleep sideways? The Camco Fasten RV Leveling Blocks have been a lifesaver. You can add more if needed, though we’ve gotten by with just one 10-pack, which costs around $35-$65 depending on where you purchase. Lightweight, stackable, and easy to store, these blocks make setup quick, easy, and way more comfortable.
5. MaxxAir Vent Fan Cover
RV fans are great for airflow, but rain used to mean closing them and trapping stuffy air inside. The MaxxAir vent fan cover lets us keep fans running rain or shine, improving airflow and reducing condensation without worry. It’s sleek, compatible with many RV roof vents, and provides zero-leak protection. Installation on our RV roof was easy, and at around $35, it’s a simple, affordable upgrade that keeps our rig comfortable no matter the weather.
6. Camco Tastepure RV Water Filter
Not all campground water tastes the same and not to mention some hookups can be downright questionable. We had considered one of those extensive water filtration systems but didn’t want to pay the hefty price, so the Camco TastePURE RV Water Filter with its advanced 6-Step Filtration Technology was the perfect choice especially with a price tag of around $15. The filter lasts about 3–4 months depending on usage, providing reliable clean water without frequent replacements. It attaches directly to the hose, removing sediment, chlorine, and off flavors, giving us peace of mind that our family always has safe, great-tasting water, even at the sketchiest RV sites.

7. IKEA Trones Shoe Storage
IKEA trones cabinets opened and filled with shoes
I know I’ve talked about this amazing organizational shoe storage before, but seriously—they’re just too good for RV life. We have a few of the IKEA Trones cabinets, and they hold shoes, undergarments, homeschool supplies, and so much more. We even use the tops as little shelves for extra storage. If you RV with kids, you know how fast shoes pile up by the door, and these have been a lifesaver. Slim, wall-mounted, and available in multiple colors, they keep items organized without taking up valuable floor space. Priced at around $40 for a 2-pack, they’re an inexpensive upgrade that makes a big difference in keeping an RV tidy. Check out our previous article about more storage ideas here!
8. Purriko Refrigerator Deodorizer
RV refrigerators can get smelly fast, especially when you’re traveling for days at a time. The Purriko Refrigerator Deodorizer is a small but mighty upgrade that keeps unwanted odors under control without using chemicals or taking up much space. Unlike flimsy baking soda boxes that spill and lose effectiveness quickly, this sturdy little metal gadget is a game-changer. It lasts for years, doesn’t need batteries or refills, and works silently in the background to keep your fridge (and even freezer) smelling clean. For under $25, it’s a simple fix that makes a big difference every time you open the door.

9. Mini Dehumidifier
Mini countertop RV dehumidifier
RVs are prone to condensation, especially in humid climates or when cooking and showering inside. We use the SEAVON Portable Mini Dehumidifier which is small enough to sit on a counter or in a corner without taking up floor space, and it uses minimal power making it a great option for boondocking. Its 27oz tank helps prevent mildew, mold, and that damp “RV smell,” keeping your rig comfortable. While this exact model is currently unavailable at the moment, there are plenty of similar mini dehumidifiers that work just as well for RVs.

10. Keyless RV Lock
I almost didn’t include this on the list since it’s a bit pricier for a budget-friendly upgrade, but the convenience makes it worth it. The keyless RV lock is priced around $150, though you can often find it for less with deals and discounts. We got ours around $99 for a Black Friday deal, so be sure to mark your calendars! It combines security and ease and there is no worrying about lost keys or making spares. Just punch in the code and you’re in. Plus, the kids can get inside easily without us needing to be around or waiting for keys. Check out our full review of this RV lock for more details.
11. Hughes Watchdog Surge Protector
This is another budget-friendly RV upgrade that falls on the higher end of the price tier, but it’s worth every penny and it could save you a lot of trouble if something goes wrong. Campground power can be unpredictable, and the last thing you want is to fry your RV’s electrical system. The Hughes Power Watchdog Surge Protector keeps our rig safe from voltage spikes and surges. We love that it has Bluetooth monitoring, so we can check everything right from our phone. Prices vary depending on whether your camper is 30- or 50-amp, but they usually start around $139.99, making it a smart and protective addition to any RV setup.
12. Furrion Backup Camera
Backing into campsites used to be stressful, but the Furrion backup camera completely changed that. We use the Vision S model, a more budget-friendly option starting around $180, though prices vary depending on the features and extras you choose. No matter which model you go with, it provides a clear view behind the trailer, making parking safer and smoother. It can also be used while towing to improve visibility and enhance safety when changing lanes. This upgrade has saved us from several campground arguments while backing into our spot and adds a lot of peace of mind while driving.
