Campgrounds Near Williamsport, Pennsylvania

Hidden Valley Camping Resort, near Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania, sits on over 100 acres of what used to be a dairy farm. While most of its guests are seasonal campers, it also has big-rig-friendly overnight sites. This RV park has two swimming pools, a basketball court, three playgrounds and a miniature golf course. 

Riverside Campground, near Montgomery, Pennsylvania, has 135 sites. It is an easy hike into town, and the campground sits next to a large city park featuring a skateboard area, a soccer field and playgrounds. While this RV campground does not have a boat launch, one is nearby for nonmotorized boats. Cable and Wi-Fi are available at each site, and there is a spacious laundry facility.

State Parks Near Williamsport, Pennsylvania

Surrounded by the Tiadaghton State Forest, Little Pine State Park offers several family-friendly hiking trails along the edge of the 45-acre Little Pine Lake. Poe Patty State Park lies at the confluence of Big Poe and Penns Creeks, and it is a prime spot for trout fishing. A portion of the Mid State Trail runs through this park, with options for short hikes. This park lies adjacent to Bald Eagle State Forest. Starting in late December, this park is a great place to go snowmobiling. The campground accommodates 83 campers up to 20 feet long. 

From mid-April to mid-October, Hills Creek State Park is an excellent place for a camping adventure. There are 85 campsites. Follow the Lake Side Trail to watch ospreys from the viewing platform. Additionally, this park is home to various birds that migrate seasonally through the area. Bring along a picnic to enjoy in one of two picnic areas before going for a swim in Hills Creek Lake. The 137-acre lake is a prime warm-weather fishery. This park lies within easy walking distance of State Game Lands 137, where hunting is allowed seasonally. 

National Sites Near Williamsport, Pennsylvania

Steamtown National Historic Site, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, is a fabulous place to see old steam train engines. They offer a variety of excursions lasting from 30 minutes to many hours in a passenger car pulled by a steam engine. Wander around the railroad yard while keeping an eye out for moving trains to see how workers restore steam engines. 

Washington-Rochambeau National Historic Trail is over 600 miles long. The trail's design allows you to see the route American and French soldiers followed between 1781 and 1782. The course runs across nine states and Washington D.C. In Pennsylvania, you can visit Independence and Valley Forge national historic parks, Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, Schuylkill River Valley National Heritage Area, and Fort Mifflin. 

Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site displays an American industrial landscape as it was between 1771 and 1883. Start your explorations at the visitor's center by seeing the museum-quality displays and watching or listening to the audio-visual programming. Then, head out on a self-guided tour, which includes entering many of this site's historic buildings. Interact with heritage animals on the farmstead. In the fall, treat yourself to one of the apples from the vintage orchard. Staff hosts special events during the summer and near major holidays. This is an excellent place to go birding, with experts counting over 120 species throughout the year. Bring your bike so that you can go on a leisurely ride. 

National Forests Near Williamsport, Pennsylvania

Finger Lakes National Forest is about 110 miles north of Williamsport and is the only national forest in New York. Part of the North Country Trail runs through this forest, and there are many other hiking trails. Seasonally, guests can pick blueberries, apples and raspberries. This forest has an abundance of boondocking opportunities along with three developed campgrounds. Most will want to camp at Blueberry Patch Campground because Backbone Horse Campground is for horse campers, and Potomac Group Campground is unreachable in an RV. 

Allegheny National Forest is the only national forest in Pennsylvania. It is a fantastic place for an off-roading adventure, and over 100 miles of trails are available. Cool off on a hot summer day by swimming in one of the lakes. A variety of boats are available to rent at Kinzua Wolf Run Marina. The 36-mile-long Longhouse National Scenic Byway is a beautiful place for a drive. There are nine campgrounds where you need to make a reservation and many non-reservable campsites. Dewdrop Campground on Kinzua Bay's shores is a favorite with many, and there is a 2.5-mile interpretive trail nearby. Sitting on a ridge about 3 miles east of Alleghany Reservoir is a top option for those following the 96.3-mile North Country National Scenic Trail. You will love seeing the black cherry and oak trees near this campground. 

Covering parts of West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia, George Washington and Jefferson National Forests have more than 1.8 million acres to explore and more than 30 campgrounds. While there, you can view cascading waterfalls and go hiking, mountain biking and swimming. A beautiful trail to follow is the Apple Orchard Falls Trail, leading to an iron-ore furnace, a waterfall and a mountainside boulder field. Trout fishing there is often fantastic, especially along North and Jennings Creeks. The federal government manages these national forests as one unit.

See undisturbed parts of this park by riding on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. The Canal Exploration Center is a fantastic place to learn about the people who lived along this river from 1825 to 1876. The short hike along a boardwalk leading to Bridal Veil Falls is a terrific hiking option, or take the 1.5-mile stroll through a deciduous forest to see Brandywine Falls. 

New River Gorge National Park is about 380 miles southwest of Williamsport. Take time to see the New River Gorge Bridge. This impressive steel arch bridge is the longest in the Western Hemisphere. Explore the buildings in the Thurmond Historic District, which were mostly built from the 1870s to 1930s when this area was a busy freight terminal and passenger railroad depot.
