Chillicothe was founded in 1812 and served as the capital of Ohio from 1812 to 1816. The town was originally known as "the Big Miami" after the river that runs through it. Later it was renamed in 1878 in honor of Chillicothe, Illinois, which a fire had recently destroyed. Over the years, Chillicothe has played several important roles in Ohio history. It was home to the first bank in the state, and it was also the birthplace of both Rutherford B. Hayes and James A. Garfield, who would both go on to become presidents of the United States.

In the city is the Ross County Historical Society Museum, which contains artifacts from early settlers and Indians. Nearby is the stone mansion known as Adena State Memorial, which was constructed around 1805-1807 by Ohio governor and U.S. senator Thomas Worthington. The Chillicothe Gazette is housed in a replica of the first statehouse and runs a printing museum. The construction of the Ohio, Erie Canal, the Marietta and Cincinnati (now Baltimore and Ohio) Railroad increased the distribution of local farm produce during 1852. In addition to heavy trucks and automotive parts, papermaking has been a significant industry since 1812. Chillicothe had a branch campus of Ohio University in 1946. This city was once a major center of industry, with companies like Champion spark plugs and Liggett Myers tobacco based in the town.

Today, Chillicothe is a charming small town with a rich history. Visit Adena Mansion and Gardens Historic Site, a stately estate listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Take in the views at Yoctangee Park, or explore the Ohio River Museum. There are several unique shops and restaurants to visit and fun seasonal festivals like the Chillicothe Balloon Festival.
