Although Gulfport and Biloxi are in the same metropolitan area and share the same county, they both have their own distinct histories. Biloxi was first settled in 1720 and was later dubbed the capital of French Louisiana. In 1722, the capital was moved to New Orleans because of fears of hurricanes and high tides.
