Explore Glendale, California, in an RVshare RV Rental

Before the arrival of the Spanish explorers, the area that would become known as Glendale was home to the Tongva tribe of Native Americans. This tribe called the area around the Los Angeles Basin home for approximately 7,000 years, which is evidenced by 2,800 key archeological sites in the area. A permanent Spanish presence in the area was established in the 1760s, and 20 years later, in 1798, Corporal Jose Maria Berdugo established the title to the Rancho San Rafael.

The Rancho lasted for years under Jose’s guidance until 1831, when he passed away, and the land went to his children. After another 30 years passed, his son and daughter, Julia and Catalina, decided to divide the land between them. After more divisions, a court decided to dissolve Rancho San Rafael, in a decision called the “Great Partition.” As a result, the parcels that once made up the Rancho were sold, and the land began to be settled in earnest.

Of the settlers, six people contributed 150 acres of land, which would come to be known as the "Town of Glendale." This happened in 1887, but it wasn’t until 1906 that the city would be fully incorporated. By then, the town had grown to 1,486 acres, which was the first of many growth spurts. In fact, within 20 years, the city would once again balloon to 12,294 acres. This would only level off in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s when the city would grow to its current 19,580-acre size.
