El Monte, California is quiet, but it’s also only a short drive from Los Angeles, Pasadena, and Glendale. The city sits in the San Gabriel Valley and has a population of about 110,000 people. The area was originally used by Spanish explorers in the 1770s as a resting spot along a trade route. The first permanent residents to the area arrived in 1849, taking advantage of the California gold rush. Farmers eventually arrived, and the area became a hub of agriculture. The city was officially incorporated in 1912.

During the 1950s and 1960s, El Monte was a haven for budding rock and roll artists, and groups and performers such as Ritchie Valens, The Grateful Dead, Johnny Otis, and Earth, Wind & Fire performed there. The city was also home to Gay’s Lion Farm, which raised wild animals, including the lions used in the MGM logo, for use in the film industry.

El Monte has a Mediterranean climate. Summers are warm, but temperatures rarely reach higher than the mid-90s. Most summer days are relatively clear and dry as well. Winters are mild, with temperatures between 40 and 70. The fall, winter, and spring months see a bit more rain, but the area’s rainfall is still less than the average across the rest of the United States.
