Explore Cullman, Alabama in an RVshare Rental

Before European colonization, present-day Cullman was part of the Cherokee Nation. Colonel Johann Gottfried Cullmann founded the city in 1873. The colonel was a refugee from Germany who arrived in America in 1866. While working in Ohio, he started creating ideas for developing a special colony of working people, particularly immigrants from Germany and other countries. He learned about the large unoccupied lands in the South and traveled to Alabama to see them. While in Alabama, he presented his idea to Governor Patton, who provided him with human resources to explore the area.

Later, Cullmann had a meeting with Lewis Frank, a land agent for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N), which ran from Decatur to Montgomery. He started a robust advertisement program to attract workers, and families started arriving in the area in 1873. The colony grew, and its population increased as German immigrants and American citizens moved to the area.

In 1874, community members voted to incorporate the town. It was named "Cullman" after the founder but with a single "n." Besides being a city, the Alabama legislature made Cullman the capital city of Cullman County in 1877. Today, Cullman City is 24.39 square miles with over 16,000 people. While in the city, you may want to visit the Ave Maria Grotto and Cullman County Museum. Many parks and recreational sites in and near Cullman City are ideal for hiking and camping.
