Pattison State Park

is located just south of the city of Superior, Wisconsin, off of WI-35. Further north is the city of Duluth, Minnesota, which is a port city on Lake Superior. This state park is a unique place to visit because it is home to one of the largest waterfalls east of the Rocky Mountains, Big Manitou Falls. The 165-foot falls are only one of the highlights that you can enjoy at the 1,436-acre park. Also, since there is abundant water in this region, there is a lot of wildlife that live in the area as well. Nearby cities include Superior and Poplar.

Pattison State Park

Inside Pattison State Park

Pattison State Park is a forested area that is made up of spruce, fir, birch, aspen, and more, which means that it's an ideal location for wildlife watching. There are over 200 species of birds in the park and 54 species of mammals that you may see. You can hike in the area to see beautiful vistas at the falls and the gorge below. There are also hiking trails that go through the forest that you can explore. There is also a 300-foot beach in the park where you can go swimming or fishing.

Since Pattison State Park is located so close to Lake Superior, there are a lot of things in the area that you can enjoy. There are a lot of interesting restaurants in the area to check out that serve burgers, wings, and barbecue. You can also check out several museums in the area to learn more about the Lake Superior area.

Sightseeing

Superior Entry Lighthouse

The Superior Entry Lighthouse was built in 1913 on the shores of Lake Superior. It is not open for tours, but you can still visit the lighthouse and take some breathtaking photos. The lighthouse stands 70 feet tall, and there is a concrete pier that allows you to get closer to Lake Superior, which is a gorgeous place to watch the sunrise.

Fairlawn Mansion and Museum

Fairlawn Mansion and Museum is one of three of the Superior public museums in the area. The mansion was complete in 1891 and was built for Martin Pattison and his family. The mansion has murals on the ceiling, a grand entrance hall, marble fireplaces, and stained glass windows. There is also a garden that you can take a stroll in.

World of Accordions

The World of Accordions is home to over 130 displays of some of the most recognizable accordions in the world. The museum holds historical documents, patents, histories, and manufacturing information. There are also instruments in the museum that are kept on hand to teach individuals how to repair them.

Lake Superior Zoo

The Lake Superior Zoo is a great place to visit with kids. There are exhibits about African lions, Australian animals, primates, barnyard animals, and more. Don't forget to explore the nocturnal building to see creatures that sleep during the day, like the two-toed sloth or the kinkajou.

World's Largest Ball of Twine

If you are looking for something that will create memories, then visit the World's Largest Ball of Twine. A few cities in the country claim to have the largest ball of twine, but this one is by far the heaviest. The ball is about 21,280 pounds.

How to Get to
Pattison State Park

From Duluth, take I-35 South and then use the left lane to merge onto I-535 S/US-53 S via exit 255B. Stay left to remain on I-535 S, which will turn into Hammond Ave. Turn right onto Belknap St, and then turn left onto WI-35. In about 12 miles, start looking for the Pattison State Park entrance on the left.
