Bayou Segnette State Park is only a short 13.5-mile drive from the city of New Orleans in Louisiana. It's located near the Gulf of Mexico on the Mississippi River, which provides it with a unique terrain. Visitors will discover marshland and swamps that are home to a variety of wildlife, including several bird species and reptiles such as alligators. Bayou Segnette State Park
The park features a boat launch into Bayou Segnette, making boating and fishing popular activities throughout the year. During the summer months, guests enjoy swimming in the wave pool. The many species of wildlife found at Bayou Segnette State Park make this an excellent area for wildlife viewing and bird watching, especially when hiking along the 2.8-mile nature trail. After a day of outdoor activities, you can take advantage of the picnic areas, playground and campsites.
Inside Bayou Segnette State Park
The inside of Bayou Segnette State Park offers multiple recreational activities for the whole family. Cool off in the wave pool for an additional small fee. The popular boat launch provides access to fresh and saltwater fishing; some known catches of the area are redfish, bass, bream, catfish, perch, and trout. Take a hike along the 2.8-mile nature trail while observing nature. There are several pavilions throughout the park where you can have a family picnic amongst the woodland trees.
Fishing
Bayou Segnette State Park offers both saltwater and freshwater fishing. Species you'll discover here include largemouth bass, catfish, trout and redfish. There's a convenient cleaning station located near the boat launch.
Geocaching
Bayou Segnette State Park is part of Louisiana's State Park and Historic Sites Geocaching Adventure. Here, you can search for a Geo Project Cache, which has a special clue that you can find and record. Use this clue, along with ones from other parks, to find the Final Cache somewhere within the state.
Nature Watching
While exploring Bayou Segnette State Park, you'll find plenty of wildlife such as alligators, turtles, lightning bugs, minks, raccoons and opossums. Bird watchers will enjoy looking for glossy ibis, eastern bluebirds, red-shouldered hawks and bald eagles. Hiking
There are three short trails found within Bayou Segnette State Park. In addition to a 2.8-mile Nature Trail, you'll find Wildcat Walk, which goes through the forest from the main parking lot to the picnic area. The dog-friendly West-We-Go Trail is a half-mile easy hike on flat ground. Boardwalks take you over the wetlands, which makes it an accessible walk and suitable for all ages.
Boating
Boating can be done from the park's Bayou Segnette boat launch. You can also enjoy canoeing on the park's tributaries and canals.
Swimming
Bayou Segnette State Park has a wave pool that is quite popular during the summer months. It's open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Families will feel safe with on-duty lifeguards and a life jacket rental station. There's also a smaller splash pad and slide for the little ones.
Biking
There's a paved loop circling both Bayou Segnette State Park and a golf course with scenic views that bicyclists are welcome to enjoy.
How to Get to
Bayou Segnette State Park
From the town of Westwego, head southwest on Avenue East toward Fifth Street. Take a right onto Westbank Expressway and then turn right on Drake Avenue. From there, follow the signs to Bayou Segnette State Park.

Parking lots can be found near the boat launch and swimming area. The large lot located by the wave pool is well-suited for large RVs.

Yes, reservations are necessary. You can make reservations online, by phone or as a walk-in. A $4.50 nonrefundable fee is attached to each reservation. Campsites are $33 on Fridays and Saturdays. Sundays through Thursdays are $30 from April through September and $25 from October through March.
Yes, your pets are welcome at the park. Keep in mind that dogs must always be kept on a leash that is no longer than six feet. You'll be expected to clean up after your pet and keep them behaving appropriately.
