Located near the towns of Plum Branch and Parksville, this South Carolina state park occupies the peninsula near Lake Thurmond. Since the park is surrounded by water, it is the perfect spot for water-based fun, such as fishing, lakefront camping, and boating. You can access the lake from the two private boat ramps. While you are there, spend the day fishing for striper, catfish, bass, or crappie. Hamilton Branch State Park is an excellent location to kick back and enjoy the beauty of the area.

Hamilton Branch State Park Campground

If you want to camp along the shore of Lake Thurmond, there are plenty of sites available for your RV. The campsites at Hamilton Branch State Park can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, but most will fit those rigs up to 35 feet. Throughout the park, you will find eight comfort stations. These facilities include modern restrooms with hot showers. The park also offers two dump stations for RV travelers. Like most state parks in South Carolina, there is a minimum two-night stay to reserve a campsite.

Heritage RV Park

For those who want to get out of town, you might want to consider a stay at Heritage RV Park. This RV campground features 50 sites that can fit all those big rigs. This Augusta campground is a few minutes from Interstate 20, and it is close to all the stores, restaurants, and attractions in the area. All the sites have full hookups with 30/50-amp electricity, water, and sewer. At the premium spots, you can enjoy a little more serenity under the stars or spend some time relaxing at the beautiful picnic facilities. The daily rates start at $40 per night.

Lick Fork Lake Recreation Area

Those campers who want a primitive campground should check out Lick Fork Lake Recreation Area. This campground is perfect for those boondockers. There are only nine RV sites with no hookups. However, you are close to the park's hiking trails and fishing pier. You can even launch your boat from the park's ramps. There are a few comfort stations with vault toilets near the campground. If you plan to stay at this site, the campground is only open from May to November. The daily camping fee is $7.

Inside Hamilton Branch State Park

Hamilton Branch is known for its water activities on Lake Thurmond. However, there is plenty of fun for those who want to stay on land. Hamilton Branch offers group picnic shelters and short bike trails. On the trail, you can hike or bike to the connector portion that links to the 12-mile Stevens Creek Bike Trail. 

Outside Hamilton Branch State Park

Hamilton Branch State Park is just outside the towns of Plum Branch and McCormick. The surrounding areas are great spots to grab some dinner or pick up a few items for your rig. While you are visiting the area, you might want to check out the local attractions.

La Cantina

If you are in the mood for eclectic Mexican dishes, then you might want to stop by La Cantina. The open-air cantina is an excellent spot to grab a drink before your meal. While the menu is limited, you will not want to miss an opportunity to try the famous Horno Steak cooked in the handmade brick and clay oven.

Michelle's Pizza

For those who want to grab a slice of pizza and wings, make sure to stop by this McCormick establishment. Michelle's Pizza serves up some of the best Italian specialties in the area. If you want a stromboli or calzone, you have come to the right place. In addition to that, Michelle's is the perfect spot to order a homemade burger or try some chicken wings.

Definitely Delicious

With a name like Definitely Delicious, you cannot help but stop in for a meal. This restaurant has all sorts of items on the menu, including appetizers, entrees, and desserts. You might want to start the meal with some cheese fries. Definitely Delicious also serves up burgers, wings, chili dogs, and seafood. However, the main attraction is "Da Bags." These specialties include your choice of garlic, Cajun, or plain butter. You can select from shrimp, crab, or vegetables for your meal. All the ingredients are shaken and served in a bag with corn and potatoes.

Fishing Village Store

If you need to grab a few items for your trip, plan to visit the Fishing Village Store. This small grocery store carries basic grocery products. You might even find a couple of grab-n-go items on your list. For those who are hitting the lake, this store has fishing supplies, non-ethanol gasoline for boats, and live bait.

Food Lion

After a few days of camping, you might need to make a run to the grocery store. Food Lion is a great choice in the McCormick area. This store offers a wide range of products, including grocery items and household goods. You can even pick up some goodies at the deli or bakery for a quiet picnic lunch.

Kroger

If you need a more comprehensive selection of products, then you may want to visit Kroger. You can find a large assortment of produce, dairy, meat, and seafood at this location. If you need to grab some of those household goods, there are several products at this store. You should visit the deli to pick up sliced meats, cheeses, or premade salads. There is even a pharmacy so that you can refill any prescriptions.

Sightseeing

Dorn Gold Mines

You can check out the historic mine near McCormick. In the 1850s, gold was struck at this mine. However, by the time McCormick's founder purchased the mine, it was exhausted of all the gold. This site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Today, you can check out the area and see if you can find any gold remnants.

Baker Creek State Park

Baker Creek State Park is adjacent to Lake Thurmond. This park is on leased land from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. While you are there, you can enjoy plenty of amenities, such as the two campgrounds, a lakefront pavilion, picnic shelters, and boat launches. Baker Creek is also home to a nature trail and plenty of wildlife, including waterfowl, deer, and wild turkeys. You might want to hike or mountain bike the 10-mile trail that winds through the park.

How to Get to
Hamilton Branch State Park

If you are traveling from Augusta on Interstate 20, you will want to take Exit 200. Turn right onto Georgia Highway 100/River Watch Parkway. At this point, you will have to stay on the road until you reach Highway 28/Furys Ferry Road. Make a right and drive for 19 miles. Once you see the signs, you can follow them into the park. The Hamilton Branch State Park entrance will be on the left.
