Central Michigan

If you’re like many Americans, you may have a less-than-positive opinion about Michigan. The state’s economy suffered greatly as the auto industry packed up and left, and Detroit often makes the news for all the wrong reasons. However, Detroit is just one small corner of an otherwise enormous state, and when you’re visiting the interesting, unique destinations in Central Michigan, you’re close to all sorts of great attractions and far away from all of the negativity that the press seems to dwell on. Next time you’re rolling your RV through the Upper Midwest, stop in Central Michigan and check out these one of a kind attractions.

Popular Tourist Attractions

Michigan Historical Museum

From nature to art to industry, there’s a lot of history to this Great Lakes state, and you can learn about all of it at Lansing’s Michigan Historical Museum. Full of permanent and changing exhibits, lots of interactive and hands-on displays, and enough computer-based and audio/visual entertainment, that will be interesting to even the most distracted youngsters. A visit will get you and your family a solid education on Michigan’s past, present, and future. The museum is open daily, and admission is quite affordable at just $6 for adults, less for seniors and children under 18.

Florence Maxwell Sanctuary

Central Michigan is a great region to visit if you’re a birder, and the Florence Maxwell Sanctuary, also known as the Florence Maxwell Audubon Woods Preserve, in Mount Pleasant is an ideal place to spot to watch fascinating winged creatures. Over 110 different species have been observed at this peaceful 40-acre site, so grab your binoculars and your birdcalls, and stake out a great spot. The Sanctuary is open daily from dawn until dusk.

Dow Gardens

A beautiful place to visit no matter the season, Midland’s Dow Gardens features 110 acres of lush outdoor grounds plus a dreamlike indoor conservatory. In warmer weather, the beautiful gardens are in bloom and are a great spot for a family nature stroll through the flower-lined paths. When it’s cold, the conservatory is a bright spot in a snowy landscape, plus springtime is butterfly time! Children and adults alike love watching these delicate insects flitting about them as they enjoy the warmth of the conservatory. The Gardens are open daily, and admission is just $5 for adults and $1 for children, with a slight upcharge for the butterfly exhibit.

There are 67 full hookup sites, free wifi, a lake that’s perfect for fishing or boating, and laundry facilities on site. It’s super close to the Soaring Eagle Hotel, and guests have access to the pool, hot tub, sauna, and fitness center, plus a water park for a small admission fee. The Park also offers free shuttle rides to nearby attractions, so you can leave your RV parked and hitch a lift.

It’s a great outdoor festival after a long, cold winter, and it brings out the best from everyone in the region.

Mount Pleasant Glass & Ethnic Festival

The end of September in Mount Pleasant means it’s time for the annual Glass & Ethnic Festival. The region has a rich history of glassmaking, and the festival celebrates that with displays, demonstrations, crafts, and more.
