Explore Chesapeake Beach, MD in an RVshare RV Rental

Located in Calvert County, Maryland, Chesapeake Beach was initially constructed to be a waterfront resort. The idea, which was the brainchild of Otto Mears, resulted in a vacation-like town full of luxurious amenities. It featured direct access to Baltimore via railway. It included a 16-foot boardwalk, beaches, bathhouses, a racetrack, hotels, and casinos. On the boardwalk, one could find additional features such as a roller coaster, a dance pavilion, and a bandshell. Through the help of some business-savvy men from Denver, the resort-style town was built in the 1890s.

The first train to transport cargo and visitors to Chesapeake Beach started on June 9, 1900. The railroad remained in operation for 35 years until advances in the automobile industry and the effects of the Great Depression forced it to cease. Once called the “Honeysuckle Route,” the train took passengers on a one-hour trip from the countryside of Maryland’s south to the ever-popular resort destination. The last train to leave the station did so on April 15, 1935.

Fortunately, the old station has reopened its doors as a museum called the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum. It opened in 1979 through the valiant efforts of volunteers, the community, and preservationists of the area. You will find photographs, presentations, exhibits, and artifacts displaying the resort during its prime. The museum is now a part of the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
