Schertz is a large city in the San Antonio-New Braunfels metropolitan region of Texas. The city, which has a population of about 42,000 people, was first settled in 1843 by Alsatian immigrants. Originally, the city and surrounding area were used for agriculture. Later, a railroad and air force base brought more jobs and residents to the area. Today, Schertz offers many exciting events, plus plenty of entertainment, shopping, and dining options. Visitors can also take in the surrounding landscape and enjoy outdoor activities.

The fourth of July is an excellent time to visit Schertz because the city holds a large parade and festival despite the warm summer temperatures. The residents celebrate Independence Day and recognize the service of U.S. Armed Forces members from Central and South Texas. Each year, Schertz also holds Absolute Jazz, a one-day festival celebrating this iconic music genre. City celebrations continue through the fall and winter. SchertzFest is held in September, while the Holidazzle and Festival of Angels are held in December.

When RVers visit Schertz, they could also head to Crescent Bend Nature Park, where they can enjoy a hike or take in the beautiful scenery. The Natural Bridge Caverns are another gorgeous and exciting natural wonder that shouldn’t be missed. Additionally, Hinman Island Park offers some outdoor walking opportunities, and visitors can often spot birds along the Comal River. For indoor fun, the Cosmic Mayhem Blacklight Mini Golf and Bar offers entertainment for the whole family. Finally, the Texas Selfie Museum also offers family-friendly activities.

Blanco State Park surrounds a portion of the Blanco River. The river is well known as a hotspot for fishing, and anglers travel from around Texas and the country to catch rainbow trout and largemouth bass, amongst other species. National Sites Near Schertz, Texas

Missions were a common sight during the settling of Texas and the country itself, as Catholic missionaries sought to convert Native Americans to Christianity. These missions also helped to promote Spain’s interests in the New World and were often centers for commerce and information. At the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, visitors can learn more about the role missions played, gain knowledge of the area’s native peoples, and learn more about the history of the area. The park is home to four missions built in the 1700s.

Visitors to Schertz can head to the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park to get a feel for the more recent history of Texas. The park provides information about the late president, his family, and his works. The park also offers fascinating information about the history of cattle ranching in the area. A one-room schoolhouse, the Texas White House, Johnson’s childhood home, and the LBJ Ranch can all be visited with one trip to the park.

Another way to learn more about the area is by heading El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail. Over the years, the trail was witness to several historical events, including the implementation of Spanish missions and the cattle ranching trade when the area belonged to Mexico. The trail is part of what was once known as a royal road that linked Mexico City and North America. Visitors can also learn more about the area’s native peoples, Spain’s influence, and Texas’s drive for independence.

Despite incredibly warm summer temperatures, the Sam Houston National Forest is lush and welcoming. Visitors to the forest can enjoy water activities at Lake Conroe or one of the area’s many ponds or streams. A beach at the Double Lake Recreation Area also offers excellent swimming options and makes a great spot for a picnic. There are also dozens of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding options, and the Lone Star Hiking Trail, which runs for about 128 miles, presents a unique hiking challenge for RVers looking for a workout.

The Davy Crocket National Forest spans about 160,000 acres. The forest is home to dense areas of trees, streams, and wetlands, all of which create diverse ecosystems that support an abundance of wildlife. Visitors can often spot deer, ducks, geese, wild turkeys, and, occasionally, black bears. Visitors can hike or bike ride through the woods. The forest is also home to Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area, which sits on a 4-acre lake and makes an excellent spot to have lunch or dinner outdoors. The lake is also popular for swimming, boating, and fishing, and there are several nearby camping options.

A slightly smaller forest, the Angelina National Forest spans 153,000 acres. The forest also covers parts of the North Neches River, so there are many opportunities for water activities, including boating, swimming, and fishing. Hiking options also abound. For a less rugged experience, visitors can head to one of the forest’s four developed areas, including a boat launch at the Sam Rayburn Reservoir. The reservoir is the largest human-made body of water located completely in the state.
