Camper was rented to me with a known defect. A propane alarm went on at 3 AM. The four family members that were sleeping in the camper exited and the alarm went off after the door to the camper was open for a few minutes. All four of the family members smelled the gas leak.
Owner responded quickly to a call later that morning and came to my home . At that time he stated that he knew there was a leak in the line to the propane tank. He stated that the switch to the tanks was set to the tank that leaked. He went and got a full tank and switched them. He also stated that the tanks were full when he dropped off the camper on 6/27 and that he thought it wasn't leaking enough to run out of propane and asked if anyone was using the water in the camper. For the most part family used the facilities inside our home, but that should not have made a difference as I was assuming we were renting a functioning camper for the "trip".
Matt (the owner) stated that as long as we didn't use the water or stove it would be okay for the duration of our rental period.
I explained to him the I did not feel comfortable leaving family in camper with a known propane leak. I also explained to him that we (my family) had a close family friend die in a propane tank explosion in his garage.
We ended up disconnecting the tanks entirely from the camper and returned the camper early. The general state of the camper was good and the owner was very friendly and was also able to drop off and pick up the camper at my home. Aside from this propane issue the rental experience would have been perfect. I do not know a thing about camper maintenance and repair, but I do know that the camper should not have been rented with a know defect that was not disclosed to us at the rental start period.
