Explore Howell, Michigan in an RVshare RV Rental

European settlers arrived in what is now Livingston County in the 1820s. The county was formally established a few years later in 1833. The area that would become the city of Howell was settled in 1834. The first log house was built in 1835. The area was originally called the Livingston Center. Families started migrating here from nearby states like New York, which increased the need for homes, public houses, and taverns. The first sawmill was built in 1836 followed by a post office that same year.

Howell almost became the county seat of Livingston County in 1836. However, townspeople from Brighton opposed the claim. It took more than a decade for Howell to be able to formally accept the seat. Howell became a village in 1863 and then a city in 1955. The historic Livingston County Courthouse still stands today on East Grand River Avenue.

This city is the largest in its county with a population of almost 9,500. Howell is situated next to the 262-acre Thompson Lake. Anglers are welcome to try their hand at catching largemouth bass, northern pike, bluegill, perch, and crappie. This lake is accessible through Howell's Scofield Park, which has a boat launch as well as ample picnicking spots. The Brighton Recreation Area is only 15 minutes away while the Island Lake Recreation Area is a little over 20 minutes southeast.
