The city of Fenton was first established in 1834 under the name Dibbleville. Clark Dibble, who the city was named after, was one of the first settlers in the area. William A. Fenton platted the city only a few years later, calling it Fentonville. Fenton was an American politician who served as the seventh Lieutenant Governor of Michigan. The town was called Fentonville for several decades until it was incorporated as a village under the name Fenton in 1863.
