Explore Vero Beach, Florida, in an RVshare RV Rental

Having first been settled by pioneers in the 1880s, the area that would become Vero Beach, Florida first served as farming land. Like much of the industry in that era, the land was set aside for cattle farming and the growth of citrus groves. Soon after settling in 1887, many aspects of a town began to appear in the area known as Vero. This includes a post office, a railroad ticket office, and a mercantile store.

As the nationwide railroad began to snake its way through Florida, new townspeople began to flow steadily into Vero. As the town grew, businessmen near the turn of the century decided to undertake a massive land reclamation project that helped build the area up for even more settlement. In 1919, the town of Vero was officially incorporated. This also led to the creation of the Indian River County, where Vero was seated. A few years later, Vero was re-established as Vero Beach, Florida — the name it still carries today.

Like much of the state, Vero benefited from the massive boom after World War II. During the war, the U.S. Navy built the Fort Pierce Naval Amphibious Training Base, a Naval Air Station. Since then, the Vero Beach, Florida area has become valuable to aeronautics. In 1957, Piper Aircraft opted to use the area as a research and development hub.

Today, Vero Beach has a population of over 15,000 individuals and serves as one of the more populated cities in Indian River County. The aeronautics industry is still strong here as well as tourism, thanks to the miles of beaches.
