Jackson is both the capital city and largest urban center of the state, making it the first must-see destination in western Mississippi on our list.

Visitors with a love of all things wildlife related will love the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and the Jackson Zoo, as each attraction offers amazing opportunities to get up-close with nature and learn even more about the fascinating wildlife. Children and adults alike will particularly love the interactive dinosaur exhibits at the museum!

Visitors wanting to learn even more about the history of their surroundings will also want to stop-by the number of museums on offer to them, including the Mississippi Children's Museum (great for little ones and older children), Old Capitol Museum, and the Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center. These attractions all offer great insight into Mississippi’s past.

As you’d probably expect, Jackson also provides plenty of stunning outdoor recreational attractions for you to enjoy. These must-visit places include Eudora Welty's Garden, LeFleur's Bluff State Park, and the Mynelle Gardens. Don’t forget to pack your camera!

Delta National Forest

The Delta National Forest is the only bottomland hardwood national forest in the nation, so it’s certainly a destination that you’ll want to check-off your bucket list while visiting the western Mississippi region. It covers over 60,000 acres of forested wetland and is well-known for its large range of wildlife, including black bears, deer, alligators, butterflies, and neotropical migratory birds (just to name a few).

There are also over 50 miles of trails within the area that are perfect for hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing. Three of the most popular trails include Blue Lake Nature Trail, Clark Lake Trail, and Mud Lake Trail. These are great for all levels of fitness and hiking expertise too!

There are only primitive campgrounds within the forest, however RVers can stay at the Magnolia RV Park Resort, which is just over 30 miles away. It offers 66 sites featuring pull-through and full hookups.

Greenville might be one of the smaller cities in western Mississippi, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of fun activities, events, and attractions for you to enjoy!

The region is best-known for its museums, historic sites, and outdoor recreation areas, and Greenville is certainly no exception. It’s also home to the River Road Queen Welcome Center, which would have to be one of the most unique welcome centers you’ll ever come across. After all, it’s set on a scenic and architecturally stunning house boat!

For even more history about the area, be sure to stop-by the Greenville Air Force Base Museum, 1927 Flood Museum, and Century of History Museum at the Hebrew Union Temple.

Additionally, there are a number of fantastic places to stretch your legs and enjoy the fresh air. These include Greenville Cypress Preserve, the iconic Mississippi Delta, and the world-famous Winterville Mounds (one is actually an underground museum!).

The Delta Village Mobile Home and RV Park is located just 3.5 miles from the city center of Greenville, just on the outskirts of the region.

Vicksburg is the only city of Warren County, but don’t let that fool you – there’s still plenty of fun to be had within this western Mississippi historic hub!

In fact, the place is teaming with historic sites and museums to behold, particularly those concentrating on military history. Some of these must-see attractions include the Vicksburg National Cemetery, U.S.S. Cairo Museum, the Vicksburg National Monument, and Vicksburg National Military Park.

The city of Cleveland has a significant past as a center of African-American business and social life, and today it is a bustling commercial hub, filled with restaurants, shops, and other attractions.

Music lovers will also enjoy the two Mississippi Blues Trail markers located in Cleveland, with these celebrating Chrisman Street and blues musician W. C. Handy.

The Martin & Sue King Railroad Museum is another must-see attraction within the city and will have both adults and children in awe of the model railroad set-ups.
