The park is the only National Park Service area that celebrates the history of the whaling industry and its influence on the United States. Be sure to leave time on your tour to see the New Bedford Whaling Museum, founded by the children of those in the American whaling industry. The museum houses whaling logbooks, journals, whaling art and literature, and 19th and 20th century whaling technology. The museum is also home to the world's largest ship model, Lagoda, a half-scale whale ship built in 1916. The museum has four species of complete whale skeletons on display, including a Blue Whale, the world's largest mammal.
