Strataca, also known as the Kansas Underground Salt Museum, in Hutchinson is a massive salt mine with salt veins that stretches from Kansas to New Mexico. Sitting at 65 stories below the ground, there is an underground salt museum and tram tour that contains a 250 million-year-old salt crystal.

The Big Well 

Advertised as the world’s largest hand-dug well, the “Big Well” in Greensburg was first dug in 1887 by a group of farmers, cowboys, and crews of transients. The well is 32 feet wide and 109 feet deep. For $2 you can climb down the spiral staircase into the heart of the well and visit the museum.

Dorothy’s House and Land of Oz

No visit to Southern Kansas is complete without a visit to Dorothy’s House and Land of Oz. You can walk the yellow brick road through the museum to see hundreds of artifacts from the movie. At the end, you can watch the movie that plays on a loop 24/7 in the gift shop. 

Dalton Gang Hideout & Museum

The city of Meade has a small connection to the infamous Dalton Gang of the Wild Wild West era. A tiny 1887 Victorian cottage was briefly owned by Eva Dalton Whipple, who was the sister of the outlaws. The museum is a great 1940s-era tourist attraction and has some good artifacts to see.

World’s Largest Hairball

If you like weird stuff then you don’t want to miss this 55-pound trichobezoar hairball removed from the stomach of a cow in 1993. You can touch it, but you can’t pick it up. The hairball is the main attraction of this small-town museum containing mainly cowboy artifacts.
