Hillforest Victorian Museum

The Hillforest Victorian Museum, which overlooks the Ohio River, was originally the home of businessman Thomas Gaff and his family in the mid-1800s. The Italian Renaissance-style house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark. Look for the arched windows, balconies, and ornately carved brackets throughout the house, which are characteristics of the style. Also visit the historic log house and surrounding half-acre adjacent to Hillforest. The house was built in 1823 and is thought to be one of the oldest log cabins in Indiana.

Underground Railroad Site

Take a driving tour that stops at several known Underground Railroad sites in southeast Indiana. You can pick up a guide at the Blaine H. Wiseman Visitor Center and choose from three driving tours that link places and stories from slave narratives, newspaper accounts, and court cases. Learn the stories of the brave men and women who traveled the route through Indiana to escape slavery and hear their accounts of the harrowing trip.

Milan '54 Hoosiers Museum

The Milan '54 Hoosiers Museum celebrates the "Milan Miracle of 1954," when the Indians of Milan High School (enrollment: 162) defeated the mighty Muncie Central Bearcats (enrollment: 1,662) and won the state championship. The story was retold in the 1986 film "Hoosiers," starring Gene Hackman. Learn about which parts of the movie were accurate, and which parts were played up for Hollywood, and learn more about the players and the game that is a solid part of Indiana basketball lore.

 Oxbow, Inc.

Oxbow, Inc. was founded to preserve the most important wetland area in the mid-section of the Ohio Valley. The wetlands attract the largest numbers of ducks and herons in the tri-state area. There are more than 270 species of birds listed in the area and at least 66 species of fish. Visit Oxbow, Inc. and take botanical walks, do some birding, and look for the local wildlife that inhabit these flood plains.

Spend a day at the orchard! Visit Beiersdorfer Orchard in Guilford for fresh peaches, plums, pears, and more. The orchard's specialty, however, is apples and apple cider, so be sure to pick some of that up as well. The family owned business welcomes kids and groups of all sizes.

Mt. Tabor Alpaca Farm

If you'd rather try a different kind of farming, visit Mt. Tabor Alpaca Farm. The 89-acre farm has a large herd of alpacas. Get a behind-the-scenes tour of the farm, learn all about alpacas, and meet the farm's other residents which include goats, honeybees, and horses. Kids are welcome and are sure to be delighted by the amusing alpacas.

O'Bannon Woods State Park

O'Bannon Woods State Park borders the Ohio River and offers fishing, boating, hiking, and horseback riding. There is also a nature center and a family aquatic center with pools and waterslides. O'Bannon Woods was also the location of one of the only African-American Civilian Conservation Corps units. The property is restored and has a working haypress barn with oxen and a pioneer farmstead on-site. The Wyandotte Caves are also nearby and offer guided summer tours to the public. The Little Wyandotte Cave tour is shorter and easier and offers a view of flowstone and dripstone formations. You may also see cave dwelling wildlife as well. This is a great, easy cave tour for kids. The Big Wyandotte Tour is more rugged, and visitors will see helictites and other unusual cave features. Near the park, you can also visit the Corydon Capitol State Historic Site, where you can learn about Indiana's history and see the state's first capitol building, built entirely of limestone.
