Nachusa Grasslands

The sprawling 3,000-acre Nachusa Grasslands is open to the public for hiking, bird watching and other low-key activities that don’t cause damage to the natural landscape. The grasslands are owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy and is home to Illinois’ first conservation herd of over 30 bison.

Visitors can access the Nachusa Grassland from dawn to dusk and if visiting in Autumn, they’re in for a special treat! The area hosts an annual Autumn on the Prairie event, usually taking place on the third Saturday of every September.

Rock River

The Rock River flows through the heart of the Blackhawk Waterways region, and it was deemed so mighty, that in 2013 it was named a National Water Trail. There’s even an art route and chocolate trail on offer, so visitors can celebrate the abundance of sweet shops and public art available in the region!

Byron Forest Preserve & Jarrett Prairie Center

If having hundreds of acres of prairie and woodlands to explore sounds right up your alley, then you’ll love visiting the Byron Forest Preserve & Jarrett Prairie Center in northwest Illinois. It offers hiking trails, picnic shelters, and an observatory, along with the chance to spot rare flora.

The Jarrett Prairie Center is also located on-site and features a gift shop, interpretive exhibits, and educational programs.

Lake Louise Campground can be found just 1.8 miles away from the Jarrett Prairie Center and it offers full hookup RV sites. The campground is open April 1st - October 31st.

Fancy taking a step back in time? The Chaplin Creek Historic Village depicts a prairie settlement typical of the middle 19th century and it was founded by the Franklin Grove Area Historical Society.

Visitors will love driving through the village in their motorhome rental and seeing traditional buildings such as a blacksmith shop, saltbox style house, and typical cottage schoolhouse. The village also hosts several special events throughout the year.

Castle Rock State Park

Castle Rock State Park spans across 2,000 acres and is located three miles south of Oregon on Highway 2. It’s an RVers delight, as travelers can drive through and witness the unique rock formations, ravines, and plants the park has on offer. There are also six miles of designated hiking trails, so you can get out and about among nature.

Other useful amenities within the park include picnic tables, toilets, grills, shelters, and playground equipment. It’s the perfect place to stop over, stretch your legs, and eat lunch.

You’ll find Lake Ladonna Campground located just 5.9 miles away from Castle Rock State Park and it offers both tent and RV camp sites.
