White Memorial Foundation
The White Memorial Conservation Center was founded by brother and sister Alain and May White in 1913. The duo are credited with saving the mallard and the wood duck from extinction. Now, visitors can tour the Center's Nature Museum and learn about the habitats and wildlife at the 4,000-area wildlife sanctuary. The Nature Center has a working honeybee hive, murals and dioramas, live animals, a children's corner, and a fluorescent rock cave. There are also scavenger hunts kids can do throughout the museum and outdoors on the grounds.
Seventeen weeks out of the year are "Museum Children Free" weeks, meaning children under 12 are admitted free with an adult. You can check on free weeks here.
Outside the museum, the wildlife sanctuary offers hiking, biking, camping, skiing and snowshoeing, and even an orienteering course. The area is dog-friendly as well,

A downhill ski and snowboarding resort in winter, Mohawk Mountain has hiking, biking, and even stand-up paddleboarding during the summer. Explore Mohawk Mountain State Park as well. The park offers pond and stream fishing, hiking, scenic overlooks, picnicking, and cross-country skiing in winter. Be sure to see the Black Spruce Bog, near the Forest Headquarters. Experts think the area was formed as a sink hole after the last glacial period, and it has now been filled in with plant growth. There is now a boardwalk in place to help visitors keep the bog from being damaged.

Famous for its catalogs and displays in home & garden magazines, you can visit the actual White Flower Farm in northwest Connecticut. The nursery has acres of gardens in the hills, to inspire everyone from beginning to advanced gardeners. Beckley Furnace Industrial Monument
The Beckley Furnace was built in 1847, and produced crude iron until 1919. It was one of the last furnaces of its kind to operate in the United States and is now a state park. Follow interpretive signs through the park, walk to view the dam, have a picnic lunch, and do a little fishing in the Blackberry River. You can also go geocaching in the area. Be forewarned, however -- there are no public restrooms available at the park.

While you're in the area, visit Miranda Vineyard in Goshen, have a glass of wine in their tasting room, and bring home a tasty souvenir bottle of vino. Or stop by Crown Maple at Madava Farms to tour the sugarhouse and learn how maple sap becomes maple syrup. You can also hike trails on the grounds, visit the Crown Maple store, and lunch at the Farmstand Cafe.
