DuPont Mansions

Northern Delaware has been home to the DuPont family for generations. Three of the family's impressive mansions are in the area and are worth a stop to visit the museums and grounds.

The Nemours Mansion and Gardens in Wilmington has rare French furniture and definite 18th century French flair. The 102-room mansion was inspired by Versailles' Petit Trianon. Wander the grounds, which are modeled after formal French gardens, and admire gilded statues and fountains as you make your way to the main house.

The Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library is thought to be the grandest of the Wilmington DuPont mansions and is home to the Campbell Collection of Soup Tureens and 85,000 other American decorative arts in its 175 rooms. Children can visit the Enchanted Woods, and there is a Touch-It Room, where kids can -- for once -- actually touch museum exhibits without a scolding. The grounds feature 60 acres of naturalistic gardens and flowers.

The Hagley Museum and Library on the shores of the Brandywine River is where the DuPonts got their start. The gunpowder works founded by E.I. DuPont in the early 1800s was located on the site, and now shows restored mills, and the home and gardens of the DuPont family.

Camper Rental in Northern Delaware

Rent a camper in northern Delaware and see living history at Fort Delaware State Park.

Fort Delaware State Park

Visit Fort Delaware in Delaware City. The fort was a Union fortress that once held Confederate prisoners of war. Originally, the fort was meant to protect the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia.

Access to the fort is by ferry from Delaware City to Pea Patch Island, where you then head to the fortress. You'll be met with costumed interpreters who help guests understand what life was like in the 1860s. Hammer cannon parts with the blacksmith or clean clothes with the laundress. Watch as the Columbiad gun fires live gunpowder. See artifacts from Pea Patch Island and the Fort's past.

You can bring a picnic lunch along -- tables and grills are available. Vending machine drinks and snacks are available, but no restaurant or concession stand is located on the island so plan ahead for food.

Where to Camp

Camp at Lums Pond.

First State National Historic Park

The First State National Historic Park is actually seven sites located throughout Delaware. If you're visiting northern Delaware, six of the seven sites are located in the area. Begin with Beaver Valley in Wilmington and see the 1,100 acres of woods and pastures first owned by William Penn. Move south through parks located in Wilmington, New Castle, and Dover for a good lesson in early American history.

Where to Camp

Once again, Lums Pond offers nearby camping.
