The Top RV Destinations in Northeast Maine

Thunder Hole
If there’s one word to describe this site, it’s powerful. Acadia National Park is one of the most beautiful parks, and Thunder Hole is the highlight of it all. When a wave travels down Maine’s rocky shore the right way, it shoots into a small cavern where the air blows water 40 feet high with a thundering roar. And aside from that aspect, this spot is one of the best places to see Acadia’s beauty like Sand Beach, Great Head, and the 110 foot high Otter Cliff.

Fort Knox
There’s no gold at this Fort Knox (that one’s in Kentucky), but it’s still a treasure. As one of the best preserved fortifications on the east coast, Maine’s Fort Knox and Penobscot Narrows Observatory is an area very rich in history. Today, the fort includes the Penobscot Narrows Bridge observation tower, which gives visitors a 420 foot high look at their surroundings. The one minute elevator ride there is the fastest elevator in Maine! This is a great site if you’re a history lover, but the observation tower alone makes this a must visit.

Quoddy Head State Park
The most easternmost point in America, Quoddy Head State Park is a beautiful place packed with natural beauty. The historic West Quoddy Head light (the easternmost lighthouse) in the park was actually built in 1858, and first commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson. Wildlife viewing in this park is incredible, as is the scenery. There’s the Quoddy Channel, which separates Canada and the US and the soaring red cliffs at Grand Manan Island, plus whale offshore, hundreds of birds all around (including bald eagles), and more. A one mile round trip walk leads to a bog that hosts sub-arctic plants that aren’t really seen outside of Canada.
