Explore Wauchula, Florida in an RVshare RV Rental

Wauchula is found in Hardee County along the Peace River and has a population of just over 5,000 people. Once known as the “Cucumber Capital of the World,” the citrus crops are a bigger agricultural crop in Wauchula today. This is a quiet town that includes Downtown Wauchula Historic District and its Main Street.

In the beginning, Wauchula was a thriving center focused on citrus and vegetable crops. This was eventually replaced by cattle ranching, which became a more profitable industry for the area. In 1886, the Florida Southern Railway came through Wauchula as it connected southern Florida to Bowling Green, Kentucky. The railway gave the town its name. It comes from the Miccosukee word wa-tu-la-ha-kee, which means “call of the Sandhill crane.” Once the railway station was constructed, the town grew quickly. It was incorporated in 1902, and it became the county seat in 1921.

In 1995, the Florida Main Street organization declared Main Street Wauchula as a Main Street community. Since then, the area has been transformed with new businesses arriving and the development of Heritage Park. This park has a lovely fountain surrounded by benches where the town holds special events like monthly movies and fitness classes.

The Peace River in Wauchula provides visitors with a place to wade, snorkel, and look for fossils. Kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boating are popular activities on the river, and you can expect to see several bird species as well as the occasional alligator as you explore.
