Prior to March of 1950, the town of Truth or Consequences was officially known as Hot Springs, and for a good reason. Beneath the 28-square-mile footprint of this desert flat is a heated aquifer that bubbles to the surface. Then, in 1950, a popular radio game show known as Truth or Consequences crafted a 10-year anniversary publicity stunt in which they found a town to change its name to the name of the game show.
