After being established as the county seat of Coweta County in 1828, the city of Newnan, Georgia became a prosperous town. Due to the number of doctors and hospitals in the city, Newnan was mostly untouched during the Civil War. As a result, the city has many beautiful examples of antebellum architecture.

While Newnan has deep roots in the antebellum South and slavery, it is one of the few cities in Georgia to feature a museum that focuses on African American history. The Coweta County African American Heritage Museum and Research Center is located on Farmer Street, next to an unmarked slave cemetery. Newnan is also home to the first Black library in the county, the Sara Fisher Brown Library. It was built in the 1950s and has since been converted into the Community Action for Improvement Center.

Newnan is also the site of the trial of John Wallace, a wealthy landowner who was the first white man to be convicted by the testimony of a Black person. The witnesses were two fieldhands who were forced to help burn the body of the victim. The novel, "Murder in Coweta County," describes the events in detail, and a movie was released starring Johnny Cash, Andy Griffith, and June Carter.

Newnan has a population of over 42,000 people. This city, just 40 miles from Atlanta, has a wonderful blend of small-town charm and big-city amenities. While the greater metropolis features excellent museums, live events, and amusement parks, the Chattahoochee and Oconee National Forests make it easy to get away in a hurry.
