Explore New Castle, Pennsylvania in an RVshare RV Rental

After the Revolutionary War, John Carlysle Stewart traveled to the New Castle area to explore the land that had been donated to recent war veterans. After he determined that about 50 acres weren't accounted for, he decided to stake his own claim on the area. The land was located right where the Shenango River and Neshannock Creek met. By 1825, New Castle had become a borough with a population of about 300. When New Castle became a city in 1869, its population had dramatically increased to around 6,000.

New Castle thrived after the Beaver and Erie Canal system was constructed. Raw materials and goods could be quickly and easily transported up and down the river, giving factories and mills needed supplies. The Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad more than doubled the local population over just a few decades. International firework companies moved into the area, giving the city a reputation as the "fireworks capital of America." New Castle recently celebrated its 200th birthday and continues to be a city of historic and cultural significance.

Notable people from the area include educator Joseph Baldwin, NASA astronaut Andrew R. Morgan, and composer Ira D. Sankey. The Scottish Rite Cathedral and North Hill Historic District are two significant landmarks that you can tour. The North Hill Historic District consists of 450 acres of historic homes, with many dating back hundreds of years. The Scottish Rite Cathedral was built in 1925 and became a meeting place for local Masonic groups. This building is still in use today and often hosts the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
