New Canada was established in October 1840. At the time, it was referred to as T14 R6 WELS. It was renamed as New Canada Plantation in 1881. It wasn't until the 1970s that the town become known as New Canada. Much of the area is a hub for farming and timber harvesting. 

Roughly 1,000 acres of New Canada are part of Maine’s Public Reserved Land. Thousands of cords of wood have been harvested from this land over the last few decades. The town is also close to the township of North Maine Woods, another of the state's top lumber exporters. Like New Canada's public lands, this area is also a popular spot for hunting and outdoor recreation. The Fish River and Saint John River are two local waterways that run through the nearby town of Fort Kent. These fast-moving rivers are popular spots for fishing and boating.
